Supposedly Jesus sacrificed himself on the cross to save humanity and open the gates of heaven to us. But if God is omnipotent, why did he have to go through all of that? Couldn't he just have snapped his fingers and open the gates of heaven instantly?

And why were the "gates of heaven" ever closed in the first place? Why couldn't they have just always been open?

There is a good reason for all of this...
This had to be done because God can not look upon sin...
So He sent Jesus to die on the cross so he could be our path to God...God loves us all so much that he sent His only begotten Son to die on the cross to give us free access to Him....He made us He wants all of us to be with Him so thats why He did it....The gates of Heaven have to be closed to evil entities....No evil can enter the gates of Heaven... Heaven is pure and must stay pure and will stay pure....

That is because the bible is old news. Look into the King Hasbro edition of Transformian Schematics. Optimus Prime is saving us as we speak from Megatron, who's greatest trick was to convince the general population that he does not exist, thereby making any argument against his existence null and void. Grace be to Optimus Prime.

I agree with the Muslims that the "Death and Resurrection" are not in the Bible as it is depicted by Christian theology.

God didn't want mind numbed robots, he wanted people with cognitive abilities. He is glorified when people chose to die to themselves and live for him. So... how about it? Do you want to live for yourself now, and die for eternity or die to yourself and let His desires become yours and live a full and contented life...forever!
