I just moved in with my bf. I have a golden retriever (3 1/2 yrs) and he has a husky (3 yrs). Everytime would would have them meet, they would always fight. Well, i just moved in a few days ago. My golden had pinned down the husky and ended up putting a good size gash on the bottom of his paw right above the top pad. They are not neutered, both males. We have talked about neutering them. Then again, there is no garuntee that that will work. Does anyone know what we can do to eliminate the need for an alpha dog? If not, then what can we do to keep them from fighting without having to keep them seperated all the time? We are both busy during the day, but are home nightly.

Neutering may help or it may not do anything. If this is dominance aggression, it probably will not do much of anything as that is probably not related to testosterone.

How are they acting now that the golden has hurt the husky? Does it look like some kind of order has been established or are they still at it? It is dangerous for everyone involved to have this kind of fighting. You can't keep them separated in the same house or yard because the barrier can make them even more aggressive towards each other.

The most useful thing would be if the husky were to take a back seat to the golden as it seems the golden has taken the upper hand. The gash could have come from a stray canine instead of an actual bite in which case they may both have good bite inhibition and be making more of a frightful racket than doing any actual damage.

If they seem to still be fighting, I would look for some professional help. If they seem to be somewhat calmer, I would crate them or leash them up and see if they can sleep in the same room together.

People really can't help dogs settle these kinds of differences and it can be dangerous to do so. Some dogs may never get along if neither is willing to back down.

Take care not to get hurt.

There is no guarantee that neutering will stop the fighting but it could help along with some training . you reduce the testosterone so they may settle down a bit ,
most important
Stop them before they fight , things to stop the dogs from doing . posturing- the boys standing erect with tail held high looking directly at each other . if you see them doing this give them heck. this is them posturing ,
Bumping against each other , kinda like teen age boys would do, this is a challenge, give them heck for that as well.

Any growling, they should be reprimanded for as well, and any direct eye contact between them must be reprimanded . keep them separated unless both of you are present and watching for the signs.
It might even be a good idea to have them leashed when together until they are neutered and have leaned that you will not put up with dominant behaviour

I have two neutered male Goldens in my doggy family and they get on realy well together. When the younger one was a puppy the older one just used to growl at him if he overstepped the mark but there has never been any aggression between either of them.

Because your dogs have been only dogs in both your homes it's only natural that they will fight for territory now.

I think I would have both your dogs neutered if I was in your position.

They will fight for dominance and the Alpha will always come out top but I am it is quite disconcerning for you never knowing when this is going to happen.

If you are both out all day I would advise separating them until you return home to be on the safe side

Neutering is a must if you have two male dogs in the same house. There is no way around that.

If you can't keep an eye on them, you will have to keep them seperated when you are gone. That is not ideal...as they need time to establish their places in the pack, but you can't just leave them to hurt each other either.

You may want to consult a professional trainer who has experience in this. There are ways to monitor and break up dog fights, but you risk getting injured...so it's best to take someone's advice who knows what they are doing.

You have a large dog prob. lol, You will never elimenate the need for the alpha...you are the lead dog to your golden..BF is the lead to the sled dog....
If you two stage a fight the golden will bite BF toe off and the ....nevermind....Just get a clean spray bottle filled with fresh water and when ANYONE gets aggresive say NO and give 'em a god sprintz. In time though, one is alpha the other will know and the two can cohabitate.
