Ms Crone, truth is truth, period. Neither is "worth" more than the other, it just SEEMS that way. An easy truth is less appreciated because it was obtained with little or no effort. A Truth that is hard won is appreciated for the hard earned victory of discovering that truth, but; simply because it WAS learned the "hard way" has NO relevence as to it's intrinsic value, on the general scheme of things in our lives. A hard won truth is less likely to be ignored in our futures because it involved our OWN pain and suffering to obtain it.
It's like a dollar that you work for an hour to earn as a kid. It's not worth any more than a dollar that your uncle gave you the last time he visited the family. they're BOTH worht only a dollar. The one that you earned with your hard work is more appreciated, as YOU actually had to work for it. I hope that illustrates it for you better, Ms Crone.

No, not really. For some reason we stand up and take notice of truths that costs us something, either in pain or anguish. I guess we concentrate more on what is happening around us when we experience a negative. We are more prone to take notice and look for the solution or even the cause of the pain.
This would lead me to think we should make a concerted effort to understand truth before we are required to go through fire for lack of it. Look to the books of Wisdom in the Bible. Don't shy away from the Catholic books either. There's a lot of good stuff to be found in them.
Study these books and become wise. This is a life long process so don't think a few weeks of intense study will insulate you from the pains of learning about truth the hard way ... but it will help and it will be a start.
Make a friend of high moral integrity and see how he or she does it. Sometimes it doesn't appear to be many of such people around but there are ... and I'm sure they're closer than you might think. You just need to look and you may find them in the strangest of places.

I believe all truths help you live a good life and are equally valuable, but a truth born of pain is less likely to be forgotten
