My heart goes out to you. I have had to have many pets euthanized and it is never easy. The procedure is painless to the pet. The vet will first give them something that puts them in a deep sleep and then will administer something that makes their heart stop. It's a very peaceful procedure. The cost will vary.
Jill S----your comment was very inappropriate and insensitive. My wish for you is that you find compassion someday.

I'm sorry about your dog.The procedure is quite simple. The vet will give the dog an intravenous overdose of barbiturates, which will first cause the dog to very rapidly go to sleep. Then, the heart and respiration stop.It takes about a minute or less.Sometimes, there will be involuntary "agonal gasps" for a few minutes afterward. You will think that the dog is not dead, but rest assured it is,the gasps are just a reflex, like when a chicken still flops around after it's head has been cut off. The vet should check the heart with a stethoscope to make sure, but they give such an overdose that it's very rare to have an animal still alive after a few minutes. I always stay with my animals,so my voice is the last thing they hear, and my scent is the last thing they smell.I talk to them and pet them during the entire procedure, and even talk to them after,as hearing is the last sense to go. It's a hard thing to do,but it's sometimes the last and kindest gift that we can give to them.
Oh,and the cost varies widely with different vets.It depends on the size of your dog,as they usually go by weight, and also if you're having the dog cremated,it will cost more.
And Jill S,you're an inconsiderate, unfeeling moron.

Sorry to hear your news. They will give your pet a shot and they pass on in about five seconds. It is very quick and I have seen many of them done and I have never seen any of them show any signs of suffering during the procedure. It just looks like they are going to sleep. As far as who does the procedure it should be the vet that does it, I have never heard of the vet tech doing this. If your state allows them to do it I would say no and ask for the vet. The cost will depend upon the size of your pet and the laws in your state. My state requires every animal to be cremated and if you want to have the ashes sent back to you then that will be an additional cost to you.

I'm so sorry for your situation. It is so unbelievably sad. I wish you peace and comfort.
Euthanasia can cost up to 150 dollars.
They veterinary technician will take the dog from you for a brief time to put a catheter (access to the vein) in the dog. Its not painful its just like getting a shot.
The dog will be brought back to you and you can take all the time you need to say goodbye.
If you want a mild sedative for the dog or if its normal procedure for the vet they will than give it at this time.
When you are ready the doctor gives the overdose of anesthesia and you pet quickly falls to "sleep".

I'm sorry that is gonna be so hard.See if your vet will come to the house some will its easier onthe dog,They will give it a muscle relaxant first then do the dose when your ready.I recommend being there either way.Make sure its the Vet doing it not some half *** ed idiot tech.I have had 2 horrible experiences, the relaxant made the dog hyper and they actually tried to muzzle my dog(she was blind and snapped at the tech )I threatened to muzzle the Tech and it got ugly it took the idiot 55 minutes to put a 40 pound dog down.Don't give the dog Vallium it was what hyped it up.I think I just have had bad luck I took my Moms dog in and it was so peaceful when done right.Cremation is so much a pound.Pre pay the euthanizing ahead of time, then all you have to do is say goodbye to your pet and leave.

I'm sorry to hear that. Having your dog euthanized is giving them an overdose of anesthia, which only takes about 30 seconds. It is very humane and the animal does not feel any pain. It is given through a shot. Most places offer you the decision if you want to stay with your dog or leave the room while it is done. The cost varies at different vets. I hope all works out well for you

Prices are always different depending on what vet you choose to go to so I would suggest calling aruond. I've had a few animals put to sleep and the procedure is that they put an IV into the dog's blood vein and then inject an extremly large amount of medicine to overdose your dog but they give it so much that it doesnt suffer, it just dies instantly. When my cat died she was less than 5 pounds, they gave her enough meds for a 40 pound dog. I was in the room when he did it...I didnt want her to be alone when she went and I was so nervious and unwanting it to happen I asked him what he was doing basically step by step. I was heartbroken but she didnt feel a think. I'm very sorry for your loss...Good luck :( Your dog will be with the angels.

First I am very sorry for your loss. Christmas of 2004 we had to put our Chihuahua to sleep due to kidney failure, it was one of the most painful things I have had to do. We had a great vet, I do not remember the cost exactly but I do not think it was more than $150. She let us stay in the room with her for as long as we needed and this was a very small office with only two exam rooms any way. They injected her with the medicine and she just went to sleep, she was so peaceful, I know that sounds cliche, but after a year and a half of daily injections and running her to the vet once a month, I was glad to see her finally at rest. It is a hard ting to do, but you are doing he best thing you can for the animal.
Jill S-How dare you suggest something like that, it is a heartless thing to so. You should be ashamed.

I'm sorry you have to put your dog to sleep. We had to put our 3 year old male Standard Poodle to sleep in February due to Leukemia. It was around $150 I believe. I have a page on my website all about Euthanasia that explains the procedure. Check it out, it might help.

Wow, this hits so close to home. August 8 I had my lab (age 12 and full of cancer) euthanized. It goes by the size of the dog at my vets. The euthanization cost $120.00 and then I chose private cremation with ashes returned which cost $105.00 for a total of $225.00 BUT she didn't charge me for an office visit which I think was included in the euth. charge but if she would have charged me the office visit it would have been an additional $35.00
I wish you nothing but good memories of your wonderful friend and companion.
