Paint the walls a little darker - with low sheen acrylic enamel - then paint the ceiling white - semi-gloss enamel. This will give the appearance of a taller room. Use the sheen's of the enamels I recommended for this will add durability and wash-ability for a Great looking kitchen. The trick is to paint the ceiling lighter....This always makes a ceiling appear esthetically good....Hope this helps!!

The best answer I know is to paint the ceiling a lighter shade of whatever color is on the walls (hard to do if it is all white). If you are painting the whole room, pick a color sample card and paint the ceiling the color that is two shades lighter than the color you pick for the walls. It will automatically make the room feel taller (do the opposite to make it seem shorter).

I agree with Angelic One. Paint the ceiling the same color as the walls. Then your eyes will not identify a separation between the wall & ceiling, creating the illusion of height.

When you paint the ceiling bring the color down about 5 or 6 inches onto the walls all the way around the room. Visually your eye will see a very tall ceiling.

Paint it the same color as the wall connecting to it to give the illusion of a seamless flow of color. Eyes stop when they see another color so you are more apt to see the actual height of the ceiling. -- This also works very well in small rooms

Alway keep you ceiling lighter if you want to increase your heighth. And don't create some architectural design on it either that will draw attention to it therefore drawing it down. Keep your other wall colors in a soft color scheme that won't draw attention to the difference in color. Rooms in general get smaller and cozier with intense color. Also stay clutter free. Too much stuff in accessories can downsize a room quickly.
