Almost everybody on the planet gesticulates (gestures with hands) when they are speaking directly to somebody. Sometimes the movements are subtle. Often the gesticulation becomes more pronounced as passion about the conversation topic increases.

Many people will gesticulate while on the phone, even though they cannot see the other person, yet know that they are there and exist, as part of an ingrained part of their communication patterns. (I watched another driver talking on their Bluetooth alone in their car today as a prime example)

What about those of you who pray? Do you gesticulate while praying? Or is there some deep, hidden, kernel in your brain that tells you there isn't really anything to gesture passionately to?

That is a good question to ponder on.

I guess I was always taught to pray with my hands folded, head bowed, and eyes closed in reverence to God.

But lately I have felt that God doesn't care what you are doing (as long as you are respectful and sincere). It doesn't matter if your eyes are open, if you are walking, sitting, or running. The only thing that matters is that you are spending time talking to him.

As for me -- I usually pray at the altar, keeled before God.

As a Slovak, I grew up doing that. I curbed the impulse when I learned how to give speeches, then I also learned to be cautious about my mannerisms and gestures from living in other countries. Manual gestures in Buddhism (often called "mudras", like in Hinduism) are something completely different.

One is an impulse, the others are curbed wisely.

Yes.
One of the meanings for the word "ritual" commonly used among pagans in my area is "a multi-sensorial prayer (that lays new patterns in your soul." The important word is "multi sensorial" in ritual discussion groups, it's one of the things that is emphasized is the role of movement to create a proper mind frame.
So it's often that gesticulating is used purposefully in pagan prayer, atleast among the pagans I know.

Gesture, according to recent studies, evolved before speech and operates on some of the same mental "platforms" as speech. People blind from birth gesture, as well.
