Sony made 3 models just like the Xbox 360, the PS3 made the 20gb, 60gb, and 80gb and the xbox 360 made the Core System, Premium and Elite. You will need a lot of hard drive space for saving games, putting videos, pictures, music and movies. There are also system updates and things you can download off the PlayStation Store. The 20gb and the 60gb have been discontinued. They are still out there but they have limited amounts.
Hope this helps!

you need atleast 20gb probably for the future patches and things on your ps3. As for the 60 and 80 giga difference there is nothing really that different. Just a marketing strategy, although the 60gb plays ps2 games better, but I dont know the whole story.

You would need that harddrive space for downloading videos, downloading demos, storing your pictures and music, saving your old PS2 game memory card data to the harddrive, saving PS3 game data and more.
There is a 80 GB version of the PS3 just to be more competitive with the Xbox 360 elite that has 120GB of harddrive space which is probably unnessary anyway.

Large Hard drives are needed for storing lots of content on your console. I myself have the 60GB, and I store allot of full length 2 hour long movies on it, so that way I don't even need a disc.
