My friend just called me up, and he said he just got his ball joints replaced on a '91 960. About 15 minutes after he got out of the dealer, the car makes a "KRRRRR" noise when he turns the wheel, even in park. If you guys could help me out with this, it'd be great. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: I just listened to it over the phone; it sounds kind of like a wookie, and he says the entire car shakes when it happens.

this is a common problem with the 960's from the early 90's,
I have one from the same year and it does the same thing. I took it to the dealer and they told me that it is a known issue but is harmless; has to do with the power steering lines and the bends in them. you can have it fixed if it bothers you that much but its expensive to do so. they assured there is nothing to worry about though.

Take it right back to the dealer. They can figure it out. They proabably have something installed incorrectly and it is creating torque on the rack. They may not have lined up the tie rods properly. Sometimes if the power steering fluid is not flowing properly it can make that noise.

Have your friend pop the hood, and open the power steering reservoir. It is most likely dry, so tell them to get some fluid and add it if it is. If it is draining, then tell them to take it back to the shop, because they probably neglected to hook the lines back up. He or she probably notices a little difficulty turning the wheel as well, compared to normal.
