I just purchased a Chihuahua puppy. She was reasonable priced, and I saw her parents. She didn't come with papers, which is fine, because I am not interested in breeding. The only concern that I have is that she has no tail. The lady I bought her from said that she was born that way, and the rest of the litter DID have tails . I saw them. Not that it matters, because she's mine now regaurdless, but I wonder what the standard is for Chihuahuas and their tails!

Does the bone that is in the tail go all the way to the end like a bob? Or is it a complete, short, tail that ends like a regular bobtail ends? If it is a true bobtail, rather than an injury, I would cross her to see if I could multiply the gene. That sounds adorable.
I don't really care what the breed standard is. I am not a slave to a kennel club. I like what I like and that's good enough for me. Healthiness, good temperament, and cuteness are more important than some breed standard produced by other people. I trust my own standards rather than someone else's standards. You should too. This is your dog. She is perfect to you.
Congratulations on your dog.

It is a disqualification for the show ring, but for a beloved pet, why would it matter. We have a female chi that was born with a very deformed tail and we had it bobbed. She is far from a show speciamen, but everyone that sees her loves her because of her sweet personailty. They overlook her too long legs, the hump in her back and her bobbed tail and only see the sweetest dog in the world. The vet said she was born like this because of the large litter. She was one of six and the others were fine. We bred the female 2 more times and all the pups had regular tails.

Tail - Moderately long, carried sickle either up or out, or in a loop over the back, with tip just touching the back. (Never tucked between legs.) Disqualifications - Cropped tail, bobtail.

Of course this has no bearing on her as a pet! You'll probably have a cute little butt wiggle instead of a tail wag is all. :D

the most likely thing is the tail either never developed (a genetic defect) or the umbilicle cord entrapped the tail cutting off circulation and effectivly docking it.

as long as your not planning on breeding i wouldnt worry about it!
the standard calls for a moderatly long tail that curls over the back in a sickle.

this does happen on vry rarer occassions but eh standard is the long tail.
I have been breeding for 20 + years and only saw this once. teh female I had was a 4 pound and bred to a 3 pound and the background of both were small however she had 7 pups and one which was teh runt had no tail.

its not normal..Its probably a genetic defect unless she broke her tail and had to be removed. Most chihuahuas have their tails

Don't recall ever seeing a chi with a bob.
Take her to the vet, get a clean bill of health. If she's ok, then your pup should be great.

Out of curiosity...got any pics?

Unless you're planning on showing her it doesn't matter what her tail looks like.
