would suppy a family with protein pack milk for at least 12 years. from book "population, resources, and enviroment" it takes 60 pounds of water to grow 1 pound of wheat, while it takes 2,500 to 5,000 pounds of water to get 1 pound of red meat
isnt it funny how the fathers of western civilisation were vegetarian, socrates is another vegetarian
economic facts like this were known to the ancient greeks, in plato's "REPUBLIC book" the great philosopher socrates recommende a vegetarian diet, because it would allow a country to make the most intelligent use of its agricultural resources, he warn that if people eat to much animals, there would need to be far more pasturing land.
an acre of grains produces 5 times the protein than an acre of land set aside for meat production, acre of peas and beans is 10 times more protein, an acre of spinach is 28 times more protein than land set aside for meat production.

i fully agree with you Justin Ohio, people dont know the laws of compassion, so they are harsh to themselves and to other beings. Humans are not meant to live like animals. i have been vegetarian for about 3 years now, and have a very healthy lifestyle. have you people heard of Whey protein which comes from cows milk, it is the richest source of amino you can get, why do you think they put whey powder in body building drinks for, and plus you dont just have to drink milk, look at all the foods you can make from milk, cheese,, yoghurts and other milk dishes.

I am sorry that you didn't get any real responses to your question.
The problem isn't that people don't know the facts, because you are right about that. The problem is that here are just too many different kinds of people in this world.
Some of those answers were people that didn't even take one second to look at the research. The facts that have been proven and backed by major institutes. They just went right to cutting down the idea for whatever reason.
I take it from your standpoint that you obviously don't eat meat. I also assume that this may be a fairly recent change for you. The reason I say that is most long-time vegetarians and vegans do one of two things. They either continue their own research and look for more practical ways to help the planet and support their own health. They realize that what they are doing is for them and they loose interest in the "debate". Or two, they actually go out and protest and are really hands on and passionate about their beliefs.
I am in no way saying that your question was an exercise in futility because it wasn't. Even if only one person checked your facts and had any spark of thought on the topic, than that is one more person. I have just learned from experience that most people will either ignore you, cause they are simply not interested, or they will argue with you. Now I know that you have the facts. The same facts that probably convinced you to stop eating meat. However, if someone wants to argue this topic, not debate it but argue, then they are not trying to proove themselves right, the goal is to proove you wrong. They have already taken their side. That is why there are so many one sentence answers like describing how good a steak is, or how much they love a burger. I was raised a meat eater, I know how good a steak is to a meat eater. After obtaining the knowledge that I have it is simply something I can live without. But these people have already chosen their view and it is hard to change it like this. It took me one month to convert my brother from a steak, steak, steak mindset to a veg. But he was around me everyday and he ate the food I cooked and couldn't even tell it wasn't meat. And he read all the information I gave him and that was it for him. But trying to talk reason to the masses isn't your best angle. Start with friends and family. It only take one person. Then they tell two people and they tell two people...etc.
But dealing with these people will get you nowhere. From the anwers you recieved it is clear that not one of those people took the question from a logical standpoint. It was an immediate attack. Not a debate. That is why PETA ads approach the topic the same way most meat eaters do. Short and sweet. "I love steak" is equal to, "Heres what all that rotting beef looks like in your colon". Trying to reach millions with logic is never going to work cause as a whole people are just dumb...animals. I have met people that eat meat simply cause they don't want others to think they are "wierd". Now that is plain ignorance. But then again, most people are a product of pop culture. Monkey see, monkey do. So next time I would change it up unless you can get a celeberty appearence from Justin Timberlake or Kanye West. Thanks and take care!
P.S. These people are just protecting their beliefs. Most of them were raised on meat so they see nothing wrong with it. Some people just choose to do more research about their beliefs and end at different conclusions. Health and enviroment matter to me. Some people couldn't care less. But I won't tell them they have too, if they won't tell me I cant!
P.P.S Lions don't have the ability to reason. So yes, it would be rather tricky to tell a lion not to eat meat. But as a human, you can make a choice that betters not only the enviroment but your own personal health. Do a small amount of research and then make a choice.

Because, as you can see by the range of answers, human beings have double standards when it comes to food and pets. Most people cut off to the fact that what's on their plate used to be a cow, sheep or chicken, or if they think about it at all they say "it's the way of things" or something similar because that's easier than thinking about it too deeply. People who think about it too deeply either have to level it with their conscience that they're party to the suffering of animals, or they have to make the decision to walk away from that, and have nothing to do with the whole process and stop eating meat. People are essentially lazy and don't like to change, though, so they generally will make up reasons why it's ok to keep eating meat, not because they enjoy hurting animals, but because they don't want to have to make the changes necessary to be any better than their stone age ancestors. From an early age we are socially conditioned by parents, school, culture (books and TV etc) to view some animals as "cute" and some as "dinner." I don't know if you're vegetarian or not, but please don't just resolve this as "the way things are" because that's how so many atrocities happen in the world. Keep questioning until you can get some straight answers. People only get defensive/argumentative when they know you're on the right track and they don't like it. :)

We have enough cows to supply us with meat and milk, so what's the problem? I can eat spinach or grain or chickens or whatever. It's not either/or, it's a choice of many different things. How does your explanation make my steak any less delicious?
Jeez, to find a wrestling champion you had to go back all the way to 1981? You forgot to mention all the other champions who were meat-eaters. You're not biased are you?
Your whole argument on production is not correct, it's based on supply and demand. If I had a farm with only one cow that was my only source of food for the next twelve years, then ya, your right. But usually reproduction makes this a non-issue.
You seem to have a flagrant disregard for the life of vegetables. They are just as much alive as you and me and that cow you're doting around. Vegetables are harmless and defensless. They have no arms in which to defend themselves. They have no mouth to use in protest, and yet you slaughter them as if their life had no value at all. Consider the acres and acres of nuts, fruits, berries and vegetation that you and your kind have destroyed, and ask yourself, "Am I really worth, all this devestation?"

The diet God wrote for the human species that He created in Leviticus chapter 11 is a advanced disease prevention diet that makes all man made diets that differ wrong and unhealthy for all humans. God recommends eating meat from curtain animals for health reasons that our human scientists haven't discovered yet. God's diet in the Bible that consists of grains, salt, spices, bread, fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, wine, water, milk, cheese and even curtain insects and also how to slaughter and cook these animals is actually God's version of the food pyramid for humans 3500 years before mankind knew what a food pyramid was. There is much more I can explain on this subject then the number of words I'm allowed to use here.

Why argue against flavor? Argue against subsidies, and then the market will express the true economics.
Remember your shipping costs and limited growing season when breaking this stuff down. Water is renewable, land is available, and meat doesn't rot when it's still on the hoof.
Additionally, milk contains lactose, a sugar, while meat contains a full complement of amino acids.
I'm not entirely against you on this issue. I eat way too much and hard-working people are starving somewhere.

I would consider a vegan diet but the blasted peas keep falling through the grill!
Seriously, meat is good and there is nothing wrong with it. God is OK with it too. Jesus was not a vegetarian. Is too much red meat bad, sure. But, lettuce not throw the baby out with the bath water. I also do not limit my meat to just cows, but I will eat just about anything that creeps across God's good green Earth and I will not stop till he tells me to and I do not give one rat's tickle about what some curtain wearing Greek did or did not eat. You can be the army that kept him safe and secure to think his lofty thoughts ate meat.
Remember there is a place for all God's creatures...right next to the mashed potato's!

... why oh WHY must people post this stuff in R&S?
Look, sweetie. We're omnivores. That means we eat both plants and animals. I have no beef with vegetarians (no pun intended), but be realistic. Wouldn't it also be economically sound to just stop consuming food and drink altogether? It'd save me a ton of money. I'm not sure if I'd be able to do anything with that money once I wilt like a flower, but hey. I'll be saving money.

There's one thing missing from your statements. Plant products don't provide all of the essential amino acids our body needs to function properly. Our bodies were designed to consume meat AND plant matter. In fact, our bodies were designed to eat the cow, but not necessarily to drink it's milk.
