I'm venturing to Ayers rock this coming Australian summer and one of my stops is the great Uluru. I would like to visit it and climb it or just get close to it, can anyone tell me what are good hostels and where should I look for excursions.

Thank you for you help.

There is a range of accommodation from hostel to luxury at a place called Yulara, not far from Uluru. That's it. not much else around for about 300 km.

It will be bloody hot in Summer. Also, climbing is overrated (and not liked by the traditional owners). Walking around it is much more interesting. You will be able to sort out excursions, such as to Kata Tjuta, from your accommodation.

Yulara is the only place to stay near Uluru (Ayers Rock) and they range from camping to high end accomodation. It is expensive there and even the lower end accomodation can be quite a bit more than other places in Australia. Uluru is interesting although I would not recommend climbing it during the summer. I was there in the Spring and it was only open for climbing a few hours in the morning and again in the evening due to the heat. Like the previous answer says, the Aboriginal people are not too fond of people clmbing the rock although they do grudingly accept it. There are also several tours in the area which may be a safer option in the heat of the summer that will take you around the rock and give you it's history..

Unless you fancy dying, do not even think about climbing Uluru in summer. In any case it is highly offensive to Anangu, the owners of the Rock. Walk or take a tour round it and don't miss Kata Tjuta.
