I enjoy the views from there and like to get away from the busy life. But I have actually seen coyotes there, and was also warned about mountain lions and rattle snakes. I was thinking about going hiking there at night time and look at the stars in the middle of the night. But now I kind of wonder how safe that really is. Also, you don't really seem to have cell-phone reception there. That especially accounts for the northern site of the valley. So does that mean I would never be able to spend a night a little away from the valley of Los Angeles and be safe?

Don't get me wrong, I love Los Angeles. But the city life and smog sometimes burns me out and I need nature to refresh me.

to paris hilton: why don't you walk to the top of the mountain in o'melveny park first in the middle of the night and then email or call me with your high tech equipment that seems to be working everywhere and tell me if you made it. There were many settlers, but there is only 1 me!

Listen lighten up. I just got back from a "scary" walk after dark. I saw coyotes, a bobcat no snakes they come out in the Am and dusk hours. If I feel scared because the animals are too close I have a horn. That is right the Cell phone reception is bad. So do not go there if it bothers. The whole reason we have parks and open space is to make space for wild things. I feel safer in park than in a parking lot in down town LA.

Hiking in the hill slide areas is safe. Its not the wild west any more. There are the occasional contacts with wild life but they are very, very rare. The best thing that you can do to avoid these situations is to make a lot of noise when your are hiking. Believe me the animals are much more afraid of you than you are of them. Always carry a hiking stick for emergency's. a Staff of some sort helps balance and can get you through stick situations with heavy plant life. (instead of parting the poison ivy with your hand you use your staff) and if you do run into any critters you have something to wack them with. Just kidding. Coyotes are no problem. They do not attack adults although they have been known to attack small children.
Your cell phone will probably work better than you imagine.

You would be better off to drive up into the hills and follow some of the state park trails. You will be farther from the glow of the city lights and the stars will be that much prettier.
Have fun

Come on J, You don't want to be such a pussy. ( <---oh jezz give me a break-)Your greatest danger is driving off the edge of the road in your car. Forget the wildlife dangers...I never had a problem with my cell phone...the frontiersmen/settlers who wagontrained across the Old West never dropped a single call....Have Fun...

As far as I can discern, coyote, rattlesnake and mountain lion warnings in the hills surrounding the San Fernando Valley are only periodic and seasonal. Check with the rangers if you are really concerned. Otherwise, please don't be such a wuss!

Come on on. If you feel so unsafe that go only on organized hikes with the Sierra Club or something. But be careful the BOOGIEMAN might drop your call.
