i just moved to the northern site of the valley in the los angeles and am stunned to sometimes see coyotes walking around in the streets in the middle of the night. I love nature and was thinking of may be going to o'melveny park in the middle of the night to avoid the heat during the day. You supposedly have nice views from all the way up there. But now that I see coyotes I am not so sure. My girlfriend tells me I can still do that since they don't do anything. I don't have to worry about rattle snakes and mountain lions either she says, since mountain lions don't even exist anymore and rattle snakes mind their own business. But recently I talked to a neighbor of mine and she told me that a coyote killed her dog once, and that was in her yard. So now I'm not sure.

I saw a couple of coyotes this am. I have lived in the hills for over 20 years at this location and grew up in the hill in OC. Coyotes are not dangerous to adult humans. BUT PLEASE keep you pet in doors or under intense supervision when out doors. I have had two cats aged 15 and 18 I watch them and protect them. My neighbor should be banned form pet ownership as she has had a cat a year just up and "disappear." HUM>>>>>Yea think it could be coyotes?
THey are comming closer in now because it is dry they are looking for food and water. So keep your trash covered and make sure you do not have pets or pet food out there either.

I live in the boon docks so to speak and I have a pack of 10 to 15 coyotes that live in the woods around me. I have never had an issue with them, but have lost a couple of cats and the neighbors have lost some chickens and pets as well. Yet, they have never offered to disturb our horses or cows.

Coyotes are generally fearful of humans and will run away. General rule, if you are bigger than it is, then you should have no problems. Now, I would not leave a small child or baby unattended where there are coyotes, but as for an adult, I think you will be fine. Just carry a flashlight and if you are really concerned, a cane or walking stick.

Yes, the coyotes here can be quite acclaimated to people, some are more feral than others depending where they live. Most are surrounded by urbanization so have adapted to living near people and have incorporated pets into their diet. If you have cats or small dogs, do not let them out unsupevised. They may prey on small pets, but they try and avoid human contact whenever possible. You may very well see them in broad daylight, but they will not "attack" you. Most will run or at least keep thier distance. Yes, you may have to be careful of mountain lions and even more so rattlesnakes. It is ALWAYS a good idea to be cautious for wild animals and even people when out hiking in nature. I highly doubt you would come across a mountain lion however, they too would most likely steer clear of you if around..but rattlesnakes are probably the most likely that you would come in contact with. Always watch where you step. And of course if you see a rattlesnake, leave the area...do not attempt to touch it, move it, etc. Spring and summer are the season they are most active. During the winter they hibernate so once it get cold they will not be an issue until next spring.

Well i live right next to a wilderness park. i dont know if you remember but it is the one where the guy got killed by a mountain lion and the girl got attacked by one like two day later, and it happened about 4 years ago. It was all over the news. really sad!!!! any way so i see a lot of wild animals and one day when i was walking down the road to a dead end there were these two coyotes and i kept walking and they just ran away, and the same thing has happend to a lot of people that live around here. so i could depend but i think its ok, but they are still wild so be careful

Well to answer your question coyotes are dangerous to small animals not really to people. They are kinda skitish and will run when u startle them I use to see them quiet often and they would take off. About the mountain lions they do still exist and kill people often.

i live in an area where many coyotes live you could actually hear them at night but when i go for a walk at night and they see me they tend to run in the opposite direction. they are usually afraid of anything that walks on two legs but if you have a small dog or cat they could attack and/or kill it so its best to keep small animals inside, other than that they are not much a threat to people

p.s if you walk around with a gun your probably gonna get arrested but if you must carry a weapon carry a taser, large stick or pepperspray

They are dangerous if your are a cat or bunny, or other small animal out by yourself. If you are a healthy human, unless they are sick, you are fine.

I would worry more about bees, they kill far more people that all the other animals combined.

And yes, mountain lions are still here and kill someone every decade or so, and rattlesnakes are best avoided.

Tell your girlfriend to go back to school cause she has opinions but not the facts.

Coyotes are wimps. They're afraid of people. And they're really small, like the size of a medium dog. They're only threatening to small house pets like cats and dogs. Don't be afraid of them!
