My dad is waiting for a pay check for the vet and it'll be a couple of days and my 4 month old puppy has a sprained paw. What should I do in the meantime, besides the store and vet?

I understand that it could be toooons of other things it's just that she can bear weight on it, but when you hold her paw she yelps. So my dad said its probably a sprain since he can't see any glass or needles in her paw. Its swollen up a lot though.

My small dog (10 pounds) sprained her paw a few months ago. We knew it was a sprain because she could walk on it a little and began to limp if she tried to run. She did not flinch when we touched it or applied pressure.

A sprain will heal on its own if you help your puppy take it easy. Carry him in and out for potty breaks, carry him up and down stairs, don't play too hard and don't let him jump up or down on furniture.

If he can't walk on that leg at all, or growls, bites or flinches when you touch that paw, see a vet immediately and ask for payment options.

I know you said your dad checked sharp objects... but ask him to check for dirt in her paw, like between its toes and in the middle of the pads of her foot. Does it act like it causes it pain when it bends in the joint? If so that's typically where a sprain is when dogs have one. Umm, I would take a closer look at her foot to see if there is something small in it. Have your dad help you soak the pup's foot in some luke warm water to relax it. Then since it is swollen wrap an ice pack in a towel and the gently rest the puppys foot on it, when my puppy had a sprain that's what I did. Since your dad is helping you I'm assuming you are young...don't pay attention to the person who said animal control was going to charge you with animal cruelity... you are trying to take care of your puppy the best you can. Still take your puppy to the vet as soon as possible, and your dad can try to work out payment arrangements with the vet. Make sure your puppy takes it easy so that if it is more serious than a sprain it does not get further injured. good luck.

What makes you think it is a sprain? There are a lot of bones in a paw to be broken. Take the dog to the vet. Pay the vet when dad gets money. Hope this helps.

Since it could be more than a sprain, you should get to a vet. Most vets are willing to work out payment plans with you if you are a good standing client. This really isn't something that you should wait on since more damage can be caused the longer you wait
