I'm looking for a restaurant in NYC with a somewhat elegant dress code--one where I can wear a cocktail dress to (I'm celebrating a birthday there). Nothing overly expensive though--ideally, entrees would be between 30 and 50 dollars.'

Thanks!

I'd stay away from Tavern on the green, the food is not that good. My favorites are Cru on 9th and 5th ave. Excellent food and very upscale. I also like Aureole on E. 61st. I used to cook at both places. If you want a more casual place I'd go with Alta for some tapas on W 10th and 6th Ave.

I Personally do not want to have to get all dressed up to go out. But, when you dine in a nice place, you need to consider the rest of the patrons. Some people only go out for a really nice dinner once a year. I shouldn't dumb down their experience because I look like I'm going clubbing. So, I get dressed up and follow the dress code.

If you want a good meal please don't go to Tavern on the Green, it is really just a tourist trap. It's hard to come up with a restaurant where you would were fancy clothing that isn't expensive.
You could get away with it at the Restaurant March. It isn't all that well known, except by people who have eaten there. It's on 58th and York. I went there in a very fancy dress last year. It's in an old town house and the chef, Wayne Nish has been one of NY's best chef's for years. The place is elegant. It has a tasting menu, so you can order as much or as little as you want, and depending on the wine you order, you should be able to get out of there within your budget.

I don't know of any specific places that would require you to dress up that weren't overly expensive, either. I also say don't go to Tavern on the Green. That's a place tourists go for sub-par food and service to feel as if they're "real" New Yorkers.

I would go to a lovely Spanish restaurant in Tribeca. Flor De Sol. They have Live Flamenco guitarrists and dancer Tues-Thurs.
Mercer Kitchen in Soho!
Both are a little pricey, but it's your birthday!!!
