The old saying fish and guests tend to both stink after three days doesn't really apply since it is family.

Oh, yes, it does apply; and sometimes especially to family. ;)

Just say you don't want to overstay your welcome, be gracious and helpful while there, and depart earlier than they would like you to so they look forward to seeing you again.

Depends heavily on the family.
On the whole "familiarity breeds contempt" and "absence makes the heart grow fonder" are also good adages that apply.
When you are no longer a "guest" they start sinking back into their old obnoxious patterns and start dragging you back into their drama.

Whenever we visit rellies in another state we book a motel,and let the rellies think we are doing it for their sake (so we dont put them out) It works for us.
