Something tells me that this is a small tip of a big iceburg. You and your dad have problems that go way back. Otherwise he wouldn't have overreacted when he didn't hear you say hi, and you wouldn't have overreacted when he gave you the money without a badgering.

You and your dad need to sit down and talk. Tell him about school, and don't just talk about yourself. Ask him about his day; his job or whatever and try to find out why he might be stressed out. Seriously show some interest; you might learn something about your dad that you did not know and he will probably be more than happy to share it with you if he thinks you are really interested.

Catch him when he is relaxed and a little more calm.

Good luck and I hope you work whatever this problem is out!

You can't take every person's opinion to heart. Your shoulders couldn't bare to deal with it all nor does it matter to your life. If your grandmother needs to sell her horse, then she needs to regardless with other people's opinion's are. Your grandmother seems to have a reasonable reason to sell. She isn't the only one. Many people are selling or giving away their horses because they can't afford them. California, especially, is having a hard time growing alfalfa and providing good quality feed/environments. Most vets want to have payment up front. Farriers are rising their cost due to fuel and equipment cost. Tack and horse trailer cost have risen up. I own 3 horses. I understand the expense. It is best to find this horse a good home. That can be abit hard if she is not broke to ride. She might ride, but you need to get on her and ride her abit to see exactly where her riding level is currently. So then you can tell the seekers whether she is intermediate or needs an experience rider. So no, that doesn't make you a bad owner or person if you want the best for the mare. Just have to sell her or give her away for the best reasons. Financial is a major reason, no matter what anyone says. Able to provide for her, have to have the money. If don't have the money, obviously it is the right and unselfish thing to find a home that is able to financially care and love this mare. I do have a question though. When you say: "our mare's had was on accident" regarding when she was pregnant last, is that due to the stallion you had just bought who was suppose to be gelded soon?

If you're worried that dad is feeling neglected, make an effort to hang out with him.

Go to the park with him or something, just to spend time together. I'm sure he'll enjoy and appreciate it.
