The Sanctuary Lamp is kept burning in front of the tabernacle in Catholic churches as a sign and a reminder that Jesus is really present in the Eucharist (Consecrated Host) stored in the tabernacle.

In the Old Testament, God commanded that a lamp should always burn in the Tabernacle (Exodus 27:20-21).

If there are no Consecrated Hosts in the tabernacle then the lamp is extinguished.

With love in Christ.
