A loose canon is adapted from a navy term. In the old wooden war ships cannons were ties off when they were fired. You would untie them, roll them acbk from their side portals and load them. Then re-tie them and fire them,. If they weren't tied off, they would fire themselves through the side of the boat and sink everybody. That's what a "loose canon" is. Somebody that goes off on his own and his own actions can sink everybody involved.

Anyone can be loose cannon and what I've learned from working with those with mental illnesses such as PS, is that they are not violent most of the time. Most of the time they self harm before ever hurting anyone else. They sort of have a short curcuit in their brain and can act normal as long as the wire is intact but act very strange when the wire is loose. Most people who "go postal" are normal people who are mentally ill and do not seek help because they are not "crazy." Stess gets to be too much and they become violent. Or if they are violent, it could be because of the drugs.

Yeah, I'd say he was a loose canon, all right. But it sounds like he is also someone who has a serious personality disorder. Personality disorders are extremely hard to treat because the person does not perceive that anything is wrong with him. Everybody else (or everything else) is to blame. If you can get away from situations where you have to be with him, I would. If he is a coworker or a supervisor, do yourself a favor and find another job!

In a way, you could say that.
A "loose cannon" refers to anything or anyone that, like a cannon, is likely to suddenly and unpredictably "go off" or in some way "explode" in what ever direction they happen to be pointed.

It means they are unpredidctable in their anger or other strong emotion, and that whoever is the recipient should know that this person likely did not "plan" to attack them specifically.

As was said, a loose cannon is someone who is dangerous and unpredictable. You never know when their rage will erupt. If someone HAS paranoid schizophrenia, they don't have it at times. It is a mental illness that is with them all the time, but hopefully kept at bay by medications.

A loose cannon is someone or something that is unpredictable and dangerous. It sounds like your guy that you're talking about is just a BIG jerk who is lucky enough to succeed in life. Actually, it's usually the jerks in this life that get ahead. My boss is a great example of this!
