the first step that would be usefull would be to take a gun training class. the class will teach you the basiscs like to aim, safety, loading the gun and things that one needs to know. The next is to get your license. This can be done by looking up a local club near you that offers a gun license course. The third thing you must do is to check your local gun laws in your state and town. This can be done by going to the town hall or even just looking it up online. The last step is to find somewhere to go hunting or somewhere to target practice with your new pistol. About the dui thing it depends on how many months ago it was charged. 6 months should be no problem, however as you get down to 3 or 2 months it might be a problem.

Any dealer should be able to give you all the information you desire. I would advise you to stay away from bit chain stores like Wal-Mart for your first purchase because the clerk you talk to may not be knowledgeable. In California, Wal-Mart lost their license because of so many violations, mostly because clerks were unfamiliar with the intricate state and federal laws. Before you actually buy go to a range that rents firearms and shoot as many as you can. Ask your buddies to shoot their handguns. If your at the range with a friend a complete stranger might even be willing to talk to you about his weapon and let you put a magazine or cylinder through it (just don't go lurking around the range asking people about their guns). Go out and find out what you like, what feels good to you, figure out what is appropriate for its intended purpose. Then go back to that gunshop that gave your the information and reward the owner by giving him your business.

To buy a pistol in Kansas, you need to be 21, have no felony convictions against you, and also have a legal form of ID. If you are 21, go to a gun store, gun show, or pawn shop, pick out what you want, they will run a background check over the phone, and if you pass, you can buy the gun. It's that simple.

You have to be 21 or older, and most states (if not all) require that you have a drivers/state license. You also cannot have any felony record. As for any other laws or ordances, go to a local gunshop and they will tell you if you can buy, own, use a handgun or any firearm for that matter.
Do you have any ideas on what you are looking for?

You have to be 21 years old to buy handguns and ammo for handguns. Go to the gun shop, pick out the one your want, fill out the Fed. form 4473, they do an instant background check on you by phone, and if it clears, you can purchase the gun and walk out the door with it, if there are no local restrictions preventing this. If there are, there may be an additional waiting period, a permit, etc.
