intelligent, biblically valid answer, along with supporting quotes (if this not too much to ask!).

I would like to know if the bible actually does tell us to forgive even without the offender being asked to be forgiven. I posted the question (see below) and almost every1 says "yes, of course it does" but have no scripture to back it up.

I looked in bible and in fact Luke 17:3 seems to contridict the majority view on this, --also Judaism has different view on this also. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forgiveness ) --that is, unless person "repents" how can u forgive???

Anyway heres the question again, --thanks for the response!

Are Christians required (or desire to?) to forgive those who have wronged them even if the offender doesnt ask for forgiveness or even apologize, or perhaps doesn't recognize the offense?

Maybe this will help, Matthew 5:44-45 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; 45-That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven; for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and the unjust. If that is not enough try Matthew 18:21-22; Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? v.22- Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven. Now you really should read on to v.35. The whole thing is good. preachervan2000@yahoo.com

Matthew, chapter 18: 21thru22, if you are a Christian there is no way you can carry around a grudge or be mad at somebody or hate somebody for very long. The lord would make you miserable, if you have something against somebody ask Jesus to let him help you to let it go, if doesn't go away, then I would take a long hard look at my salvation. I love reading the three short books of John, its alot about love and keeping his commandments, they should help anybody answer a lot of questions about forgiving, I mean what if Jesus didn't forgive us, we would be in a mess. Good question, hoped that helped you out.

The principle may vary per person; but for myself presently (without further thought on the point), 'do unto others as you would have them do unto you'. (I would have to look up the scripture presently).
