They rotate them selves. Also you can also help by making sure the smaller pups get on to the nipples before the bigger ones do or you can supplement feed some of the pups inbetween feedings.

This is what I did.

Cindy I would really like to see that contraption! LOL Your too much! LOL

They aren't in pairs. A dog can have an odd number of nipples. I have one with 7 right now and I had one peke with 13.

The larger puppies eat first until they are full and fall asleep, then the smaller babies eat what they can get. It is better to take some of the largest ones off mom and just let the smallest eat alone several times a day for short intervals of time. Try to keep the smaller ones on the lower udders.

The pups end up taking turns, and sometimes, the smaller will get bullied by the weak, but.... that's just nature.

And how can your dog have 7 nipples?? Most dogs have 8 or 10. My dog had 10 nipples, and her litter of 15 nursed, and they all survived, and are healthy. Some are smaller than others, though.

From the seven nipples; up to, but not exceeding, seven at a time.

I have seen mom divide the litter into two groups.. One group eats while the other sleeps, then she turns on her other side and the other group eats while the first group sleeps.. And don't mess up her groups on her cause she doesn't like it, and will give you a dirty look!

To the nipple experts.. The nipples are NOT always in pairs. I have one that had 9 nipples..

actually nipples are in pairs so there are 8 nipples no matter what, the must uppoer most tend to be the tiniest...but the strongest puppies on those nipples to encourage milk productin on them...
as for what to do...rotate making sure the weakest pups get the lowest/largest nipples.

They would either take turns or the stronger ones will push the weaker out of the way and then the fittest would win unless you subtitute feed.

The responsible pet owner would bottle feed the runtiest on powdered milk replacement and supplement the pups with mashed puppy chow and milk replacement as soon as they could keep it down. Even in smaller litters, human handling to help them thrive is beneficial to temperament.
