I have a nephew that hates his younger brother because he is a good kid and is really active in sports. So he walks up to him, calls him the "golden child" and punches him right in the face. Now my younger nephew is threatening to run away because he can't deal with it. Would you have called the cops on your older son? Isn't it still considered accessory to child abuse if you don't report it? If you were at your wits end with the problem child...wouldn't you just want to call the cops and hope it teaches him a lesson?

That's a tough one. The older one probably deserves it; is he under 18; then maybe. Thhe bottom line is they need to be seperated beofore someone winds up in the hospital.

That older kid needs some Juvenile Detention Center in his life. That kid needs discipline NOW! Call the cops and complain because this could seriously affect your younger nephew. It's not fair at all for the young one. Either smack your older nephew or just call the cops. That kid is losing it. If he doesn't get discipline soon then he might just stay like that forever, God forbid.

Of course I would call the cops if my child did something like that. If he is a problem child, I would call the cops every time he does something illegal that I know of, like violating curfew, smoking weed, drinking alcohol, etc. When your child is out of control, you need help, and the police can help. If he keeps getting in trouble, the judge can order any number of options to help him. So I definitely would.
And you are right, you can't let members of your own household abuse your child.

If my older child punched my younger child in the face and I was not able to fix this problem then yes, I would turn it over to the police. By letting this young man hurt the younger one this is abuse and should be reported

My son was caught up in drugs... (meth). He stole from us, over 2000 dollars in stuff. Yes, I had him arrested. It's the only way he learned, and got help for his problem. He is now in a boys group home, recovering from addiction. He's doing great now.

If I hadn't called the cops on him, and had him arrested, he may have never gotten this help.

We have to prepare our kids for the "real world"... which means, if you choose to punch someone in the face, and they call the police, you will go to jail for domestic violence. The law doesn't put up with this anymore.

First things first, try to help the problem child. If you can't then get him some professional help. You need to help him first because if you just call the cops on him he will probably get worse; he will hate all of you.
Now it is better to help him and if you did it all then just call the cops on him because he might not change at all and end up doing something he will regret his entire life (hurting or killing someone).

If you thought the younger childs life was in danger of course. Otherwise, no. Siblings fight all the time. Put your foot down and punish the kid, and the younger kid will get over it. The cops have much bigger problems like drug wars and people being raped not reporting it. They dont have time to deal with sibling rivalries unless one of them is a threat to take the others life.

i would and i have. for similar reasons. i didn't do it for fear of being accused of abuse, i did it b/c we'd had enough. in our case, our son had been violent before and it was time he'd learned the hard way. if this was the first time your nephew did anything like this, i'd say no,calling the police wasn't necessary but a good counselor is.
