you want to dress nicely when you go for a job.. even at fast food..
1. you look like you are serious about working ( professional)
2. It makes you feel more professional

Make sure your nails/hands look neat and clean, hair etc..

I have always called back places.. if you have to leave your application with the clerk ask for the managers name for what shift your applying.. wait a couple days and then call..
Say hi this is Michelle Jones I turned in my application on (day) and I was calling to see if you had started arranging interviews yet?
they say yes or no.. If no..you say would it be ok if I call back in a couple days and check with you again?
If yes.. you say.. Can I go ahead and set up an appt with you for one day this week?

This makes you look confident..

It them know you are serious.. you want the job..and it puts your NAME in mind when they are going through the stacks of applications..

When you go to an interview.. tell them this is your first interview and your nervous ( its expected you would be nervous at first ) but you would really like the opportunity to show them how you could be an asset to their team.. that you are a hard worker and will give them 110% if they will give you the chance..

Trust me this works..

Blessed Be and good luck something will come up soon

I remember this scenario all too well. One of the biggest tricks I had up my sleeve when I was 16 looking for my first job, but no transportation to go to apply for work at so many locations was to get the phone book, mark places that you wanted to work (make sure they are close enough) and I would just call, ask to speak to the manager, and I would explain that I filled out an application was wondering if they considered it yet (even if I really didnt fill out an application) Now for the places that you have already applied, make it your duty to call once or maybe even twice a week, ask to speak to the manager, and ask if they have had a chance to consider your application. Do not miss a week where you call these guys. Trust me, after a little while, this works. But be prepared, because working a few days at a Mcdonalds as my first job, I got sick of working really quick and I almost quit, just because I missed the freedom of being able to spend that time doing something I wanted to do. If you want to get off to a good start and make even more money, do your job and try not to play around with trouble employees who stay on the clock and not even do their job, these are always the first ones to get fired. But when management see how hard of a worker you are, you will start to get raises and even promotions. Good luck sweetie.

You probably just live in a city where the unemployment rate is very high, and almost all the jobs available are taken. Just keep looking, and also think about applying in a dine-in restaraunt too, such as a steakhouse, as a busser or host/hostess and work your way up from there. I also suggest actually going into the establishment where you write the application and ask a manager when you would expect to hear back from them.

How about retail stores? The holidays are coming up and retail stores will be in need of folks. Try Target or Walmart, Kmart, or any other retail store you might be interested in.

I will skip all the common sense job interview etiquette's and assume that there is nothing wrong with you. If a job does not call you after you have been interviewed, CALL THEM BACK. By doing so, this increases your chances of landing that job and places your interest for the job well on top of anyone else.

Good Luck you

Business Student.

First thing is you have to have a decent resume to submit along with your application. Then, when you go to a store or company, you have to dress decent. Dress proper! Don't go to a store wearing mini skirts or something like that coz it creates an impression of you. You still need to do this even if you're only applying at fast food restaurants or retail stores.

And then when you submit your resume along with the application, you have to follow up after a couple of days because this tells the employer that you are really interested to work for them. This is what I always do and ever since, I always get hired by the company I am applying for. Good luck!

You may need to apply for a work permit from your high school. They might not hire you unless you have one. You also may need an employer ready to hire you to get the work permit... sometimes it is a circle... ask the work experience counselor at your school... also call back the places you applied at and ask if they are still hiring and if you need to put in a new application since you are now 16, and let them know that you can or will get the work permit if you need one in your state.

Network with your friends. Let them know you're wanting to work. Look critically at your written application skills, they may need some improvement. I've reviewed hundreds of applications, if I have difficulty reading them or if the writing skills are poor, they go in the trash. If you're in an employment market where supply exceeds demand, you will have to be more assertive in your efforts. Also, adults make pretty good resources for employment advice. Good luck. Remember, shortest road to the top is to make yourself the "go-to" person where you work.

Lots of times places will not call you back. You have to call yourself and ask if they need any extra information about you or have they reached a decision about the position, etc. It lets them know that you're still interested in the job and if they haven't made a decision they might remember you because of the call - and hire you! Best of luck!!!!
