What you don't know about science and atheist is a lot.

So you religious people have this idea that there is a single god that has been always and about 6000 years ago he created everything in the whole Universe in 6 days including a couple of rather odd people who immediately screwed up and annoyed God no end so He banished them from a really nice place because they were tricked by a walking, talking snake. People lived a long time back then and these two people began the human race of whom some were good and some were bad and this continued with people doing a lot of killing of each other. God didn't like this so He killed a lot of people from time to time - good people and bad people in much the same way the US has been doing in Iraq. And so it goes.

Actually, don't you see a similarity between Saddam (expecting love from all Iraqis and if not he kills them) and the biblical God?)

About 15 billion years ago our Universe changed from a singularity in a great explosion that eventually became the stars and galaxies and mysteries that still puzzle us today.

Stars gradually formed from the gas that was mostly hydrogen which is the most simple element as well as the most abundant. Massive amounts of hydrogen came together and became 1st generation stars when the concentration was enough to cause fusion.

In the begining there were no complicated elements such as carbon. Carbon is the most versitile element and is considered absolutely necessary in the fabric of life.

Through the 1st billions of years stars were formed and died. Stars that were powerful enough died in a super nova and new elements were created such as the heavy elements including carbon. So for the 1st few billion years our Universe was in a very simple form.

From the debris of exploded stars new stars and planets formed which were then made up of carbon and the other heavier elements that we are made of today.

Our Earth was thrown together and was molten hot. Geologically speeking our Earth cooled very quickly and it is thought the basics of life became evident in the early stages of our Earth.

Billions of years is quite difficult to visualize. It takes a bit of work. One heck of a lot can happen in a billion years and for approximately 4 billion years life began and evolved -- and here we are today confused by ancient beliefs that have evolved into religion.

beans4brains -- The bible is not science and can not stand side by side with science. I'm sure some scientists might disagree - they are not immune to religious fearmongering.

spooky says -- I really have no idea where you get the idea that atheists are a group. I go to no 'atheist church' or other group. You claim not to be an atheist but you are very, very close. If you were at all curious you would understand why both religious people and atheists have a need to understand the wonders that we are.

Gee, and we can't figure out why America is falling behind Japan and Europe in Scince. Maybe it's because there are people like you who think that scientist say that there was a rock with a bunch of random chemicals on it and leave it for four billion years you get people. There are remidal courses at community colleges, why don't you go try one.

..... actually they think that as a result of the Big Bang atoms formed objects and objects formed (sun, moons, stars, planets, galaxies etc) and went flying through space expanding the universe and a protein rich meteriod (ROCK) collided with earth landing in the ocean that caused a chemical reaction to the already existing "chemicals" in what was the atmosphere and ocean of the planet at the time ... thus causing a genetic mutation of sorts producing 'life forms'....... in the ocean...... which is extremely scientifically possible and proveable (despite my wording it unscientifically) and also, fits in line with the biblical description of creation, according to the book of Genesis.

ALSO before you start mocking people about things you obviously haven't a clue on... i think you should know that there are two kinds of evolution: Microevolution and Macroevolution.
**** Microevolution states that species evolve within themselves and undergo change due to genetic mutations (heredity) and adpaptations to their enviornment.
Basic genetic 'mutations' occur generationally... in every species, as when two parents produce an offspring, the offspring inherits certain genes and traits from both parents, yet has a uniquely identifible dna.
***** Macroevolution states that one species can produce an entirely different one. It is based on the principle of spontaneous generation (which has already been scientifically proven cannot happen). As in a cat can produce a monkey, or an alligatior can produce an elephant, or a monkey can produce a horse, or a human.
The First type of evolution (micro) is scientifically acurate, and provable beyond reasonable doubt. And is in line with the Word of God. The bible agrees with this type of evolution.
The second type of evolution (macro) is in hypothesis ONLY, and has yet to be proven with substantial or credible evidence of any kind. It is only a theroy based on the observation of different species. The bible does not agree with this type.

So, you should proabaly do your homework about what evidences are in existence about the formation and creation of our universe, and life, as well as re-read the book of genesis to see that, when juxtaposed and compared to one another, science and the bible are in complete agreement on how the universe formed, as well as how life formed on earth, with the ONLY exception being that atheists say there isnt a God, and the Bible says there is. as it is open to interpretation and questioning.

*The bible is actually scientific in its explanation (as per time line, minus the fact that it quotes it as "days") and provides an extrememly scientific explanation on how things came to be, it just words it so that a 5year old, or someone who hadnt a great deal of scientific understanding, could read it, and know that God is, and that He made the universe.
And you figure, until Copernicus... they still believed the earth was flat and that it was the centre of the universe.
So, how is something a lot more scientific than that going to be explained to a group of wandering shepherds several thousand years beforehand? How would their minds have been able to comprehend that space and time are actually intertwined like a fabric? when even scientists today struggle to comprehend it!? how would they have been able to understand the theory of gravity? or of the sun being a gaseous ball of hydrogen and helium? To comprehend such things requires a higher level of thinking and understanding, which they did not possess. So God simply put it as such " I made the heavens and the earth, the sun the moon and stars, and all life and i did it in this order.... light first, essential compounds and elements that were needed to form all other things, like galaxies then planets and stars and so on. then i made animals and then people." They understood that, even if they couldnt understand the techinical side of it.
So the only conflict between scientific discovery and the Bible is the existence of God.

You should read up on stuff before you start insulting people.

By the way, i'm a christian..... and erm, you're kinda making us look bad....and stupid; and i agree with kenshin.... on the strawman argument. you neither made a correct statement, nor a vaild argument for the purpose of debate.

Sometimes when you leave a bunch of random chemicals in a bucket, you get cider or wine.

Isn't the spontaneous nature of chemistry amazing?

Well in some circumstances, space dust will form RNA like structures. Given the overwhelming amount of evidence for evolution and the complete frabrications of Creationists - I'd go with evolution.

Religion have spurned hundreds of different sects over these past millenia because they all have disagreements over their beliefs in God and their interpretations of the bible.

Yet you assume that every atheist has the exact same bizarre take on evolutionary theory?

Does this make sense to anyone?

You are funny....?

Didn't you know that you are powered by electricity?

Didn't you know that you are on a massive iron rock?

Didn't you know that you are made up of common elements?

Didn't you know that the Earth likely had electricity (lightning) and the elements needed to make the first living being for some time?

Your question isn't an actual question....?

Ah, a magical spirit being that exists outside of time and the universe created everything in six days, a few thousand years ago. That makes SO much more sense.

everyone is funny.
if this question was easy to answer, then we would have done it.

both sides of this one have good logic at times.

"a bunch of random chemicals --- four billion years you get people"
it can happen, and given enough time it just might.

go to school and look at why they think this, you will tend to agree that it is possible.

I personally think that life did that somewhere, but not here.

I think earth was seeded by very strong bacteria traveling in space from meteor impacts of planets with life.

then again I also think that aliens genetically modified humans at some point in our past.

and my explanation is more likely as the 2 popular ones when you look at it from a satistics point of view.
