My b/friend and I have split up. He bought me a car 3 years ago as a birthday gift and the car documents are in his name (the road tax request goes to his house). I have done mot, paid tax and insurance but i wanted to know if it is illegal to change into my name without his permission?
No use in asking him, custody battle going on, and would benefit him to wipe the car away from me!
Serious answers only please - thanks.

if you do that you could face charges for forgery(which will not help in your custody battle) talk to him first...you may have to cut your losses on this one. next time get it in your name only.

sorry, and good luck. (oh, and if you damage the car, you could face charges, and he gets the ins check, not a good idea)

Well, whose car is it? You say he bought it for you as a gift, so YOU are. Therefore the V5 is your property also. Therefore you can send it off and get your name put on it as registered keeper. You don't need his permission, it's none of his business - it's not his car.

It sounds like the car legaly belongs to him, despite the fact that he gave it you.
I would send the form off to the dvlc to tell them about a change of keeper. (You need the log book)

unfortunately you dont really have a leg to stand on. Legally, the car is owned by whoever appears on the v5

I think you'll be walking to work soon. If the Reg. document is in his name, you got not a leg to stand upon. I am not too sure DVLC will help you on this one as it is your word against his.

Try writing to DVLA, Swansea (that's all the address you need) and ask their advice, they must have come across this situation before.

Technically, it's his car, and you'll have a
tough time proving otherwise.
Tread carefully.
