The UK has a total prohibition of private ownership of firearms yet the incidence of crime with guns is increasing rapidly.

Do you agree with this statement "When guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns."?

The is a truth to it, isn't there?

Basically, you're seeing the number one flaw of gun bans and firearms ownership. Only the law abiding will obey the law. Criminals could give a damn if it's illegal to have one. they are Criminals, they don't obey the law!

A previous poster said, "the UK has very strict gun control. Gun crime is increasing, but still very low compared with the USA. Possession of a firearm is a very serious offence."

It isn't working is it? You've basically created a law that puts a sign in front of your home that says "This house is a gun and weapons free zone" What do you think someone who think that somone who doesn't obey the law, is armed and likes to steal things and doesn't care if he hurts or kills someone is going to do?

We have the same debate in the United States. However, what makes the U.S. different from everywhere else in the world is that we have a right, not a priviledge to own firearms. I can't understand why there are those here that scream about how precious their rights are yet are more than willing to give this one up.

Yes, we have our share of horrible shootings. But every time, the shooter is somone who shouldn't have had a gun in the first place. San Ysidro, Luby's, Columbine and VT. All acts of violence that were committed by a gunman or gunmen who
by law, should not have had the guns in the first place.

I may sound harsh, but you Brits have created your own Govt. mandated "politically correct" insanity yet again. How many times are you going to keep doing this to yourselves?

EDIT-Obviously gun bans don't end gun crimes. Just like banning silverware won't end obesity and banning pens won't end mispellings.

Yes I agree. Legal guns are not the problem. Legal guns hold firearms certificates and are securely kept and readily available for police checks. The problem lies with the unknown and illegal guns held by those outside the law.
I quite understand Government wishing to outlaw all guns. Government will take every propaganda opportunity to scrap privately held guns. When all guns are gone, only the government can hold weapons at our heads. No more civil wars since 'sticks and stones' can't defend against black-powder.

PS .. legal guns get used for killing rats, pigeons and other wildlife vermin. Quick and effective !

If guns are outlawed, anyone with a gun is, by definition, an outlaw. Therefore, the the statement IS true.

Your question should be, "Should guns be legal?" In the hands of law abiding citizens, guns are only dangerous to criminals.

well you HAVE! to agree with it. its a statement of fact. ask any one over the age of 50 and they will tell you that murder was a rare crime in the UK when they were kids. i remember my nan saying oh my god theres been anouther murder. thats two! in less than a month. what is this country coming to..... that was 1957!! ......we were listening to two way family favorites on the radio waiting for sunday dinner. now its about four murders a week. probably more, you know what liars the labour party are. the funny thing is there were loads of guns around then. there were three 12 bore shot guns in our house alone!! + a little 4/10 shotgun that i used as an 8 year old shooting with my grandad for rabbits. guns were for shooting extra food.....not people. and for the record!! i used to strole passed a policeman by my grandads side carrying my 4/10. all i used to get was a smile or a remark like goin rabbitin boy?....its a crappy world we have made for ourselvesand our poor children. i much prefered the old proud layed back Briton to this up tight dictatorship we have now. i used to love being out and about with my grandad and my older half brothers. had loads of fun. family was strong then. i feel sorry for kids who dont feel that streagnth of security in their family and their country.

I think wide-spread gun ownership is usually a bad idea. It seems to work in some places (Israel, Switzerland) where guns are common but gun crime rare.

But in the USA, it seems to be a terrible thing. People leave them where children can get at them, people regularly massacre their school-mates, work-mates, etc.

the UK has very strict gun control. Gun crime is increasing, but still very low compared with the USA. Possession of a firearm is a very serious offence.

No because the police have firearms!!

Do you want us to resemble the USA? Gun mad!!

We might hear of more incidents involving the use of firearms but the media these days are far and wide.

Allowing citizens to have firearms will only increase dramatically the criminal use of firearms. They will be easier to acquire and the criminal will be more inclined to arm themselves with firearms, in anticipation of what they might face.

I do agree with the statement. It seems that the criminals always have better weapons than the police and our law enforcement officials are "outgunned". Every law abiding citizen in this country that wants to own a weapon, should have the right to own one. If for some horrible reason our country is ever attacked on its own soil, between the military and all of the weapons that private citizens own, we would have one heck of an armed force.

Yes it is true, but remember this a gun is only as good as its shooter. A cop with a 9mm is much more accurate than some untrained lackey holding an M16.
