Quote:
“It is logical. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one. ” --- Spock (Star Trek II:Wrath of Khan)
Context of use:

When this quote was used it was the context of self-sacrifice, deeming it to be an emotionless choice founded in pure logic. It’s application in that case saved the lives of an entire crew at the sacrifice of one. Strangely ironic, self-sacrifice for the good of many is understood to be a sign of true love, often tied to an emotion. Emotions of course are believed to be often illogical by Vulcans and the basis for poor decision-making.

Not every application of this philosophy however has good outcome, as it can often be used as justification of many atrocities. This could lead to subjugation of a smaller group for the benefit of a larger one.

Several earth philosophers and writers also had similar perspectives

“From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs! “ – Karl marx (demanding production from able invdividuals, wieghting needs highly and distrubution to fullfill those needs)

“Actions are right to the degree that they tend to promote the greatest good for the greatest number.” – John Stuart Mill (1806- 1873) whom was a co-founder of utilitarianism. (see reference)

The quote also shares its central theme found in the philosophies of altruism and utilitarianism.

Of course “Live long and prosper” is a pretty good one too

One of my favorite's is from Shakespeare who said, "To thine own self be true and it must follow as the night the day that thou cannot then be false to any man." He got the idea from Socrates who said "Know thyself."

But my favorite quote of all time is a long one and I know it by heart. It has guided a great part of my life. Max Ehrmann wrote it. Here it is:

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.

" . . . You have been in every prospect I have ever seen since - on the river, on the sails of the ships, on the marshes, in the clouds, in the light, in the darkness, in the wind, in the woods, in the sea, in the streets. You have been the embodiment of every graceful fancy that my mind has ever become acquainted with. The stones of which the strongest London buildings are made, are not more real, or more impossible to be displaced by your hands, than your presence and influence have been to me, there and everywhere, and will be. Estella, to the last hour of my life, you cannot choose but remain part of my character, part of the little good in me, part of the evil. But, in this separation I associate you only with the good, and I will faithfully hold you to that always, for you must have done me far more good than harm, let me feel now what sharp distress I may. O God bless you, God forgive you!"
