Haiku is a type of 17 syllable Japanese poem.
In Japanese, it's not split up into 5-7-5. Wikipedia is wrong here: Only in English, is it split into this arrangement by people who are trying to imitate the original Japanese one line vertical poem.

The Japanese feel this gives a haiku good balance. They do sound nice. Some are very wise, some just sweet.
