also, do you know any good websites that have a listing of apartments for rent?
I've looked at craigslist.org, but some of them seem like fake listings

one bedroom in Greenwich Village around Jane Street $2500. If you're lucky maybe as low as $2000. Upper East Side is rich, at least $3000 for that upscale neighborhood. By the way the upper East Side goes up to 96th Street. After that it's called Spanish Harlem.

If you are looking on the Upper East side, walk around the area and ask the old men sitting in the doorways chatting with their neighbors if they know anything for rent. Make sure you have 1 1/2 month's deposit, first month and last month. You can find a studio or 1 BR for a little less than $2000 in an old walk up. My daughter found a tiny 2 BR in the upper east side and then posted on craigslist and got a roommate. It was cheaper to share than to get a one bedroom for herself. I loaned her all the money and she got half of it back for me from her roommate right away.

Upper east side is cheaper...a friend of mine got a 1 bedroom for 1900 a month. In the village, usually around the 2000 range is likely. And craigslist has worked well for me, but you have to watch, if it seems too good to be true, then it probably is.
