It is vital that the other person be receptive to you and your message. I do not support door to door witnessing, it puts people on the defensive. It is vital that we not do this.
If you are witnessing with someone you just met, tread gently. You do now want to turn them away by overconfidence and zeal.
If you are witnessing to co-workers, casual friends and neighbors, live your testimony. Be ready to testify and lead when the opportunities present themselves.
Christians often feel that we should get others to respond, this is not so. We are commanded to spread the word by planting the seed, others will nourish it, and someone else will see it come to fruition. We can do nothing without Christ's influence on the person.........

May I suggest - by the shining example of your life. Be such an impressive person that other people will want to come up to you and ask how you got to be this way.
The other kind of witnessing - that feel like being attacked - is a negative thing.

For those we are in contact with on a regular basis, - live it! and wait to give a word in season.
For those who we might meet on a train or have the opportunity to speak to them about the Lord Jesus, ask the Lord to give you an opening whilst in conversation about something else.
God uses us when people see Jesus in us.
