The fact is millions of people go to Vegas and Atlantic City every year. This is proof that people want to gamble. If you've ever seen Vegas the place looks like a building site half the time with new condos, expansions to hotels, new hotels and casinos. None of this would happen if there were not a genuine interest in gambling.

There is a state sponsored lottery in 48/50 states. It raises billions of dollars for good causes.

But the number one reason to be pro-gambling is freedom. If we live in a free society, we should be free to gamble if we want to. Why should the government create a nanny state banning millions of Americans from participating in an activity that they enjoy?

Now the counter argument may talk about people being addicted to gambling. Well that's a bogus argument. People get addicted to smoking, which is deadly. Drinking, which can be deadly. Prescription pain killers. Fast food. Fast cars. Motorcycles. Guns. If the government tried to ban everything with the potential to harm people we'd be living in a nanny state, and we'd have no more freedom. We ban gambling today, what do we ban tomorrow? Alcohol? Tobacco? McDonald's?

If we banned gambling tomorrow, over a million Americans would lose their jobs. Cities like Atlantic City, and Las Vegas would be decimated. It would throw the entire economy into turmoil. Why on earth would the government want to do this? Why would the people support the government doing this?

Consider too the effect on Indian reservations. These people were herded into crappy bits of land that the white man didn't want. Casinos are one of their primary sources of income. You take that away, and you decimate their communities.

There was an article about raising taxes on gambling today in the newspaper. Go to lvrj.com and see if it happens to be online.

Anyway, here are some convincing numbers:

1/3 of all school funding in the state of Nevada comes from taxes on casinos.

1/2 of the State's budget comes from casinos, and we ALWAYS have a surplus.

Nevadans pay zero State income tax because of the amount of money the government collects from casinos.

Good luck with your debate.

In the Philippines, gambling is controlled by the government. They finance the casinos and other games and a large part of the income goes to charities. Even church leaders cannot pressure the government into closing down the casinos because a lot of cash goes to the poorest of the poor, youth sports programs, school buildings, etc. Besides, legalized gambling deters game operators that are illegal and who are more likely to cheat the public.

No research but I can say I think gambling fills a demand for people to get out & do something fun. No one knows what the outcome will be! Also if you live in Minnesota, the native tribes are raking in the cash they deserve & able to better their surroundings to benefit all their community.
Gambling is good because it re-distributes
funds & helps keep consumerism alive & well.
Hope this helps.

You can expand that by pointing out examples in history. Here are some thoughts: 1 Christopher Columbus gambled and discovered America. 2. The original 13 colonies gambled and won Independance. The Wright brothers gambled and discovered how to fly. The list goes on and on.
My point being we gamble to better ourselves. I hope this helps :)

Just ask the residents of Vegas who pay no state tax or the Fed government who taxes the casinos and there employers and the wealth that brings great art to venues and the great shows that can be out together and the Discounted shopping and the fact that many people never travel more than 250 miles from home and will make only one Long distant trip to Vegas

Gambling is merely a form of entertainment. Like anything else, an individual who has an addictive personality can get themselves into trouble. For example, alcohol is legal and it is possible to drink responsibly. However, we all know that there are many people who do not. A person with an addictive personality can overdo just about anything. There are plenty of people who know how to gamble in moderation. Just like there are people who can drink in moderation without overdoing it.

Gambling does bring in alot of jobs, you need dealers, waitresses, security people, cashiers, and at most casinos you have restaurants and clubs. Just look at Las Vegas it is the fastest growing city in the United States all from the casinos. Hope this helps.
