I recently changed to another job in another section of where I work for more money and the experience. The new job is totally different job and it's like I'm starting all over again. I was at my first job for over 15 years and I'm in a department where some of my co-workers resent my being there because I have seniority and have a choice over where I can work, holidays, etc.. I want to get along and make friends but they shun me. There are a few who help me and are nice to me but most of them don't help me tell me the right way to do things and laugh when I make mistakes. There's word that they are forcing me to quit and go back where I came from. The boss is really busy and has a 'just deal with it' attitude. I'm not a quitter and I won't give in, but everyday is more stress on top of the job itself. I have no intention of throwing my seniority around, but you can't tell them that. It's been a few months now and those bastards haven't let up. Any advice. Thanks.

You say that there are a few nice people. Maybe you could try making friends with them. As for the naysayers, why not talk to them. If you're their supervisor, delegate important responsibilities to them so they'll feel flattered. Say something like, "I know you have lots of experience in this department, so I'm counting on you to do tasks X, Y, and Z. I know you are responsible and will do a great job." Let them know that you want to collaborate and work together. Cooperative leadership is one of the best forms of leadership there is.

If none of these suggestions work, could you talk to your sympathetic coworkers? Maybe they have inside knowledge that will help you approach the grouches. If that will not help, try talking to a mentor. As for the rumors, ignore them. I don't see why your boss would move you if you've done 15 years of good work. Not many people stay in one job for that long. You sound like a good, faithful employee.

Does having seniority mean you can fire them. If it does I would have a meeting one morning, like on a Monday, and tell them to get their butt in gear or they will be replaced with someone more willing to the job correctly. You don't actually have to do anything like that just put the fear into them that your the boss and that they could lose their jobs by acting the way they are. Be a hard a$s in the beginning but when they make honest mistakes just look the other way. Don't cover for them let them know that they made a mistake offer them a chance to fix it. after a while they will stop fearing for their jobs around you and start to see that your a nice person and that they have nothing to fear. Being a leader means sometimes you have to do stuff you don't want to do. You could be there friend but your their leader first. People don't just hand out respect you have to earn it. So earn their respect first then earn their friendship

but I get the feeling that you took a job some of them were after and I don't think that anything but handing the job over to them will make them happy

I just quit my job after going to another department last week
for the same reason.

Attempt to switch to yet another department but this time ask to be put there for two weeks before you completely commit.

Good luck, I personally could not handle the rude, mean, and ignorant co-workers so I wish you well. Keep in mind these are people that you see more than your family . . . .

Mediocrity always attacks excellence. Unfortunately, the real world workplace consists of those who try to excel and those who want to bring you down to their level and be miserable with them. Don't let them ruin your joy. You may consider looking into starting your own business. Owning the ladder is much more rewarding than climbing it.
