Opposite Of Religious

Religion is really just a structered system of belief. In that case, any significant group of people that can be identified by their system of belief is a religion.

Atheism is not the opposite of religion, its a specific type of religion, its the belief that there is no god. And often, its the belief that existence can be explained objectively through observation and deduction / induction. So instead of going to church and worshiping, they go to the lab and perform experiments and make observations. Instead of reading about the truth in a book, they infer the truth from the observations they have made.

As others have mentioned, there are even more traditional atheistic religions: Taoism and Buddhism are both examples.

The opposite of religion is wakefulness, or more traditionally, enlightenment. When you prefer to see the world as-such, and not through the distorted lens of any particular dogma or preconceived world-view, you are not being religious -- you are being ingenuous.

RE:
Is the opposite of religion atheism?

I would say that atheism is the belief that there is no God. Many people believe in God but do not subscribe to a religion, this does not make them atheists.

I would say that the opposite of religion is chaos( or lack of structure) because without it, people would not have the belief systems that have made our society.

Religion and atheism are the same in that the person has made a faith choice in one particular direction. The opposite of them both is agnosticism where the person has chosen not to even bother with it.

The opposite of religion is spiritual chaos and/or spiritual anarchy.

I am not sure that I would describe Atheism as chaotic or anarchistic nor spiritual.

No. The opposite religion is an uncaring attitude towards religion.

Atheism is the opposite of theism, or belief.

The opposite of theism is atheism.

It can be used as an antonym but I think "secular" would be better or "profane" especially since if you do not have a religion it does not necessarily mean you are atheist.
