Join before. In Ohio they pay 100% tuition at any state school while you are serving.(not sure about other states).
Remember though, you may end up in a war zone. I ended up down south for Katrina. All in all I liked my time in the guard. Good luck!

Before college. They will pay 100% of your tuition and give you about $850 a month (GI Bill+Kicker+paycheck) to help pay your bills. Some states offer free room and board in addition. This is for one weekend of work per month.

If you are going to be in college, you also should look into the SMP program where you attend ROTC while in the Guard and pick up an additional $400 a month and then commission when you graduate.

I am in the North Carolina Guard. I am doing basic and AIT first. The classes I take at AIT will apply to my college classes. Why not put off college for 6 months. That way the GI bill will pay for it. Plus they are offering some nice $$$ to join now. Ask if you can go to some drills. That way you can see what you are in for. Good luck!

You can be in the Guard and ROTC at the same time. So they pay for your college and you'll be an officer when you get out. Talk to a recruiter.

Whatever you do have an attorney look over whatever they offer you in terms of financial aid payback because there are a lot of cases where they tell you they will pay off your student loans, but they don't tell you that if they're private student loans, not government student loans, they don't have to pay them off.

Personally, because of the current unpleasantness, I'd recommend the Coast Guard Reserve instead of the National Guard.

Not now, you will be shipped off to Iraq with the rest of the National Guard. (I thought the National Guard was formed to protect our "Nation".)

I agree after college, become an officer, and then make your decision.
