Oil based:
Pros: Inexpensive, easy to use, decent wear characteristics, nice buildup, easy to find, fairly consistent quality from brand to brand, compatible with most stains.
Cons: Smells like mineral spirits, turns yellow, takes time to dry, tool cleanup uses mineral spirits.
Water-borne:
Pros: Dries quickly, easy to use, very little odor, available in non-yellowing (can be used on white floors), tools clean up with water.
Cons: Widely varying quality from brand to brand (and even in one brand between different products), some wear much better than others(some cheap ones wear very poorly), can vary from under $30.00 per gallon to over $180.00 (yes, $180.00!) per gallon, fast drying means you have less time to apply in a large or complicated area leading to problems, hard to find good quality professsional finishes for sale to DIYers, need to use a sealer to get a good buildup for proper appearance and be careful not to sand too aggressively between coats or grain pop will make the floor look fuzzy, can not be used over an oil-based stain until it's thoroughly dry (usually 72 hours).

Water based will dry lots swifter, yet won't final as lengthy. Oil based has an scent at an identical time as making use of and remains whilst drying, yet as quickly as thoroughly dried, don't have an scent after utility and lasts.

a water base will dry quicker, but wont last as long, a oil base will take longer to dry, but will fill in crazes and last longer,
