I am looking for in the price range 300-600 dollars. I would use it generally for city streets but would not like to be limited to this. Or should I just get a mountain bike because I might be riding trails?

There are plenty of good choices in that price range. Most are overseas made and they use the same few component options, so it's almost a commodity-type of purchase.

Any would be fine for dirt roads, rail-trails, smooth singletrack etc.

You'd want a mountain bike for hard core singletrack w roots, rocks, technical sections.

I feel differently than most about hybrids. If you want to ride on trail at all, a hybrid might not be the right choice. Yes, a hybrid is designed for riding on the road and it can do some packed trails, but what you get with a hybrid is something that does nothing particularly well. I would get a mountain bike. You can always put smooth tires on it if road use is what you want.

If you are thinking of trail riding I'd agree with Jay P. Nothing wrond with a hybrid but it won't work on anything but mild trials without lose gravel, mud, sand and minimal hills etc. A MTB of couse will. Smooth tires will make it a streetable bike as well. The problem is switching out the tires. I have 2 sets of wheels on mine - one with smooth hi pressure tires one with knobbies. I all depends on if your really going to trail ride or not.

Check out the Jamis Coda and the Fuji Absolute. Two great hybrid bikes.

the giant cypress is a good bang for the buck. good in cities but can handle light off road use like a fire road etc.
