mine is under my master bedroom access is thrue a trap door the temp stays about 56 year round main out of cinder block that has been water sealed it has a poured cement floor and a cement roof i installed a vent system that runs 24 hr. a day to keep the humidity down it vents out into a small green house and it works great.

You should build it on the north side of a house, preferably underground if possible. Make it fully tiled, you should use either limestone or marble tiles as they keep cool whatever the weather.

concrete shelves or did u mean before 1950 when it was 2feet by 2 feet wooden box with metal mesh to one of the sides--- either way must have air supply via open vent or small window

are you talking about a root cellar ? we use to keep veg's in one, and meat in a salt box, it was a hole dug under the house, now days they call them cellars, normal ground temp is around 56 deg, the deeper it is the cooler it is,
