Its origin was believed to have been in Mesopotamia, when small semi precious jewels were crushed , mixed with a melted fat and smeared across the lips and on the eyelids. This gave a more attractive and alluring look to the female users. Cleopatra, used crushed beetles and ants to make the red mixture she used as lipsticks.
