Theists would circumvent the question. I made an interesting observation over the last few weeks. I've been trying to analyze strong believers' psychology. It is not hard to find them, and they are not all lunatic, actually some are pretty smart. And that was the driving force as to why such irrationality. My conclusion is that most theists are not theist at all, at least the ones I observed, though not sure about one so let's say 80% aren't theist for sure. They are either deist or agnostic or in-the-closet atheist. The driving force for most is others belief. It has been shown before that there is a relation between being religious and being socially more acceptable. The secret is in trying to be like others so others like you. This pretext goes so far that sometimes they actually believe, but most of the time they are perfectly rational and know that theology is just bunch of fairy tales. Another motivation is 'giving' the sense of morality. Not saying they are immoral and hiding behind religion. But they consider others' perception of their morality more important than the morality itself; just like the social acceptance case. Consider this, there are many unnecessary safety and security procedures when you travel by air. Those are not always for your safety but to reassure you that they are doing their job and thus giving you the sense of security. The rational believers do the same. Considering that observation I am guessing that people claiming physical iteration with god are not actually deluded but perhaps attention seekers. And if there is pretext they will avoid this question, or give vague or unrelated answers.
