Hi Andy
Dont fret.. its a ploy so that BT put you off logging a fault, but there are a few steps that you can do to testa few things...
1. disconnect al the phones and extn leads, ALL from the master (1st one in the house), thus, you should have the incoming line and one LJU (socket) connected, plug a phone in and test... working?
2. If not (assuming you have a IDC tool (Krone tool) if not DIY store or ebay, plastic £2 Krone tool £7, disconnect the master LJU, thus nothing connected to the incoming line (BT dont like you doing this as the 1st LJU is there responsibilty) but you can no prove beyond ALL doubt that the line is faulty or not!, connect another LJU on the line. anyone to test the line (master or slave - slave you may not get any incoming ringing but thats it), still noisey? line bad still?
Log a fault with BT is a line fault!.
3. Line OK, then you now know its the master LJU at fault, they do go faulty but not very often. BT should come and change this FOC, however they cost about £2-£5 from ebay/diy store if you wanted to prove it 1st!
4. If ALL ok, and problem returns when your etns are re-connected you have an internal cable/LJU fault.
put one back at a tme till you find the dodgy cable, may have been carpet grippered/crushed etc... replace when you can, but at leats it cheaper than BT.
Hope this helps... if you still stuck get in touch via email ill run through it with you...
good luck

When BT test the line, unless the line is completely broken or is faulty underground the line tests ok, if you don't have a standard master socket in the house ( as described in the phone book) you have one of the the older sockets, since you have tested the line with a corded phone. Also plug in the corded phone into what you consider to be the main socket with nothing else plugged in, if the line is still noisy the fault will more than likely be outside, if you have an overhead cable coming to your house from a pole that is the most likely culprit as it is the only part of the network that is open to the elements and gets blown about, if this is going faulty the test system doe's not always pick this up. However broadband is a strange thing and can usually work (usually at a reduced rate) over a noisy line.If you are unsure which is the main socket trace the overhead cable from the pole into your house and the nearest socket will usually be the main one, Re report your line faulty and explain that you have done all the usual checks to make sure the fault is not internal, and BT will pass the job on to one of their engineers who will repair your line. Hope this helps.

RE:
BT Residential Phone Line problem?
When I try to dial out all I get is static and no ring tone. When the phone is in this state, I can't recieve incoming calls either. When I test the line - (or get BT to do it ) there's a ringing tone and then the BT answer service kicks in. My internet works some time - like now, and not...

Sound like you have a poor connection between your socket and the local exchange, If you dont have a (NTE5) master socket to test from, test the line as close as possible to where it enters your house. Phone BT (faults) and explain the problem, they should know what too look for. They may fit a new master socket for you at the same time, then all the wiring and outlets after that become 'yours'.
You could also try another handset on your line or try your handset on another line, also unplug all the filters and the hub, see if any of them are faulty and pulling it down.

I had a major problem with my BT line and got them out loads of times, similar to your probs. I eventually got a BT guy who actually knew what he was doing. Turned out that the wall was damp where my main phone line came in and the damp affected the phone socket. He put in a special main box thats constructed out of materials that dont react with water, no metal in it at all. Since then I have had no problems. Try your handset at a friends house to see if it is faulty. best of luck, could be another BT saga :0(

We had a similar problem two weeks ago BT checked the line and said it was fine but it was not we had no internet either it was very frustrating they told us it was our phone. Then by coinsidence we had a power cut and had to reset the fuse box both phone and internet came back straight away it may have had nothing to do with it but is worth a try.
Good Luck.

I had the same problem last week and my mum had the same problem today. I live in south wales uk. the best thing to do is ring bt customer services(from a mobile, number should be on your last bill) go to option report a fault and they will test the line free of charge and check if there is any matainance work going on your line. this was the case with myself and my mum's. my phone was off for 2 day's my mum's for a few hours. good luck
