So, I have a Minolta SRT101, and my dad just gave it to me...he's had it since it was first made in...the 70s I think. Well, there was film in it, and it's all shot, and I'm trying to take it out. The problem is, is when I go to rewind it, it doesn't rewind smoothly. Can any of you help me? Is my battery dead? Camera broken? Should the power be off? And I also go to try and open it, but it won't open. Help?

Okay, I'm going to try that but on my camera, if you're looking at it, there is a switchy thing (descriptive huh?) on the left of the lens. I know it's supposed to be straight up and down, but it isn't. Is that a problem? How do I fix it?

And the only thing is I feel like I've been winding for ages! How long does it usually take?

Look at the bottom of the camera. There's small recessed button that releases the camera film takeup reel. It should stay down as you flip over the rewind lever and rewind the film back into the cassette.

When you next load a roll of 35mm film, it will pop back up.

By the way, the SRT101 (I loved that camera when I had one) is a fully mechanical SLR that will work perfectly (except for metering, of course) without a battery.

I hope this is helpful.

If you are looking at the camera from the front (into the lens) that little "switch" to the left of the lens is a Mirror Lock Up. If its engaged you won't be able to see through the lens. The Mirror Lock Up function was designed for use with very slow shutter speeds. It was thought that the action of the mirror swinging up, as the shutter was released, could cause slight vibrations from hitting its "bumpers". These slight vibrations could cause blurred results. This feature was dropped on later models of the SRT-101 series and on all subsequent SRT-200, 201 & 202 cameras.

George was 100% with his answer about rewinding the film.

IMO you should go to ebay and buy the Owner's manual for your camera.

As was said there's a small button on bottom of camera. You may have to hold it down while turning knob to rewind film. PS your battery could very well be dead but has nothing to do with rewinding film.

Here is a link for the owners manual for the SRT101. It's a PDF (Adobe file) and just over 7mb so a dialup connection would take a few minutes.
