how do I sum a column of cells that also contain text? I just want excel to ignore the text, or sum all the numbers into a /gallons per year.

You don't have to do anything special.

Excel doesn't treat text like it does numbers. (At least not in 2000, which I tested my answer in.)

If you have a column with some cells having numbers, other cells with text and some with nothing in them you can simply include the whole range in your formula.

This also works with AVERAGE and COUNT

Is the text in different cells than the numbers? If so, just a =sum(whatever:whatever) should work. Also, you can sort the column in ascending order, and just delete out the text.

It's easy.

Just click the summation button or type in:

=SUM(

Then select your range. Then make sure the formula ends with a ending parenthesis.

Excel will disregard the cells with text and just add the cells with numbers. I tested it just to make sure it works and it does. So there's no special summation formula you have to use.

=sum(range)/appopriate factor to provide gallons

Appropriate factors might be

Ounces = 16
ml = ((ml*specific gravity) / 28.35)/16
