When my teeth touch there is shooting pain all over my face....I was not in any pain prior to the appointment. My dentist said he noticed the problem on an XRAY...IS this normal?

You likely have 1 and/or 2 problems. 1)While doing a root canal it is easy to have bleeding at the root tip. And it is easy to stir up an abscess at the root tip. Either of these things will result in pain since some fluid builds up under the tooth. An antibiotic would take care of any infection, while painkillers and anti-inflammatories would help ease any pain while your body clears away any built up fluid. 2)The filling or temporary filling may be high and when you bite down you are biting on the filling.
Either way go back and let your dentist have a look.
Good luck!

If you feel like you've been kicked in the face by a horse, then yes its normal.
If you haven't got any really strong pain killers then call your dentist and get a prescription for some. It takes about two days to go away.

It might be pretty common but it should not be hurting. Call the dentist. I had this happen once and he took me back into the office--after hours--and redid the tooth. Good Luck.

Yes root canals are usually very painful afterwards. Maybe you should've gotten some prescription painkillers.
