Canon Rebels evidently have something inside that goes bad and leaves a gummy type of substance on the shutter curtain. Can safely (and gently) clean it with rubbing alcohol and q-tips? I know that too much pressure will ruin the curtain, but there must be some way.

edwin has good advice, because canon reoair is $180 minimum out of warranty. but you get another warranty after they fix it. 10 day turnaround. how did you know the shutter had a problem?

found this site about it too..

I'd be concerned about cotton fibers from the q-tip getting between the parts of the curtain. Rubbing alcohol has a high water content can could pose a corrosion risk.

I once tried to clean the shutter curtain on a Nikon SLR and ended up ruining it, so be very careful. You might seek a good service center. They can probably give you an over the phone estimate.

Contact Garry's Camera Repair at garryscamera@yahoo.com and ask him. Garry is very reasonable and has a fast turn around. I've had him do a CLA on 6 of my cameras this year. He adjusted the shutter, calibrated the meter and replaced light seals that needed replacing. $45.00 + $8.00 shipping for my Minoltas.

your best bet is to have the camera professionally cleaned partly would do more harm than good by trying to clean the shutter yourself.

p.s
I just had dropped off one of my camera body to do a full cleaning and would be paying about $180 which the camera is still under warranty. which I knew that I would have to be paying for the cleaning. to my knowledge cleaning is not covered under warranty.
