They can do but they will do an enhanced CRB check on you too and other police checks etc and if they are ok you could be ok. It depends whether your credit score is low due to personal circumstances (ie being a tenant instead of a homeowner) or whether its due to fraudulent activity. I have a low credit score due to being a single parent although I have a perfect CRB and police record and no debts at all. I have been accepted for work at banks though. So it all depends on your own circumstances, if you have nothing to hide you should be fine. Be honest with them beforehand that will help too.

Yes, it happens more and more these days,
It also depends on what responsibilities you would have
working in the position you are applying for and with what company you intend to work.
If you are trying to get a job in the financial industry, you most likely will have a credit check and your credit may very well determine whether or not you get the job.

It's a very controversial issue. For one, credit scores are not "even" trhoughout the demograhpic and therefore using this criteria as one for employment automatically puts certain groups at a disadvantage.

First Direct and other financial companies are all desperate for workers but they do a credit check on everyone - if you have a bad credit rating or been bankrupt they don't want you working with their money?

Yes, or they could take it and throw it in the trash. Businesses use a person's credit score as an indicator of reliability, honesty, absenteeism, suspected drug use, etc.

It's possible, but I would ask them if that was a deciding factor in selection of their final candidate. Did they say that it would be in the job application, interview or any other paperwork they gave you?

Yes, when you're in charge of so much money, it would be tempting to take some of it or to do a "heist" as in inside job.
