I recently recieved my first speeding ticket. I was driving in an unfamiliar area and I did not know the speed limit. I came off of a highway with a speed limit of 55 onto another road. I was doing about 45 on the other road. It curved and around the curve I finally saw a speed limit sign which was 30, but in addition to the sign was an officer who, even though I slowed down when I saw the sign, pulled me over and gave me a ticket - is there anything I can do about this., do I have a chance in court, or do I have to pay the ticket?

The laws vary by state, but it wouldn't hurt to go before the judge and explain your case. If nothing else, he may reduce the fine.

The first thing you should do is go back to the area and see if the speed limit is posted. If it is, and you missed it, you are out of luck. Keep in mind if you approach a reduced speed, you are required to slow BEFORE you reach the sign. If you were clocked after you passed the sign, you are again out of luck.

Most officers will not sit in the immediate area of a reduced speed sign, perhaps there have been citizen complaints in the area.

Ignorance regarding not knowing the speed limit is not a factor. Just go to court and your fine will possibly be reduced, but not dismissed. Good luck.

Go to court, you have nothing to lose. Either you pay the fine, pay a smaller fine or maybe they will toss it. Good Luck.

Probably not. You can go to court and tell the judge your story, but he or she will probably say: Ignorance of the law is no excuse.
