I disagree with that interpretation.
and it doesn't really matter since that covenant is no longer valid.

Abraham was not choosen to be the creator of the universe. Only God is the creator of the universe. Abraham was choosen so that he could create a great nation and through that nation God would reveal himself.
God told Abraham that a son would be born to him and his wife Sarah. And the son of Abraham and Sarah would recieve Gods covenant.
Ishmael was born of Haggar. Haggar was a servent of Abraham. Sarah was getting old and had yet born Abraham a son. So Abraham got impatent and had a wife with Haggar. In those days it was not unusual to have a baby with a servant if your wife could not get pregnant.
As Sarah and Abraham were getting old God came to them and he said he would give Sarah a son. Sarah laughed and said at this late age would God give me this joy? God said why do you laugh? Sarah said I did not laugh. He said you did. Is anything impossible for the Lord?
So Sarah bore a son to Abraham. His name was Issac. It was to Issac that God gave his covenant.
Later, after Sarah had Issac, she didn't want anything to do with Haggar or Ishamel. So she had Abraham send Haggar and Ishmael into the dessert. God told Abraham that he would also make Ishmael into a great nation and that he would always be in conflict with is brothers. On the way out Haggar was weeping, and God said, Why do you weep? I will make Ishmael a great nation, but my covenant will reside with Issac.
God's coventant resides with the desecendants of Issac and was not co pas sed down to Ishmael. The great deciever tries to make you think otherwise because he wants to be like God, but he is not like God.

God's covenant is with Isaac. Sarah was promised to be the mother of nations. Sarah was promised along with Abraham. You conveniently forget that part. God did not promise anything to Hagar before she got pregnant. God does not change His mind simply because people got impatient.
Genesis 17:15 And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah [shall] her name [be].
Gen 17:16 And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be [a mother] of nations; kings of people shall be of her.
Gen 17:17 Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall [a child] be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?
Gen 17:18 And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee!
Gen 17:19 And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, [and] with his seed after him.
Gen 17:20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation.
Gen 17:21 But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year.
God only recognized Ishmael because Abraham asked him to but there was no covenant. That is with Isaac.

The covenant is with Issac.
Gen. 17:19 And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.
20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation.
21 But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year.

And yet, God chose the second son, born from his own wife, to be the recipient of the Promise.
The first born was born through Hagar, which was not Abraham's wife at all.
Bad mistake on Abraham's part, but God loves muslems as He loves all people, and sent His Son ("the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world") to take our place when He died for OUR sins.
And yet Muslems say that Moses was a prophet sent from God, but they don't believe anything he said!
Moses gave us God's Name ("I AM THAT I AM" and "Jehovah"), and Moses told us how to approach God - through the sacrifices that atoned for and covered the sins of the people.
If Moses was a prophet, then why won't they obey him? Did God suddenly change His mind? Well, as a matter of fact, He did - because these animal sacrifices were all just a shadow of better things to come, when Jesus would come, and He would be the FINAL sacrifice, once and for all time, for all mankind.
It's all there - you only have to read it to discover the wonders of God's Love!

Yes, the Muslims know this.
I know several Muslims named Ishmail (yes, with that spelling). I don't know any named Isaac.
The story of Abraham being told to sacrifice his "favored" son is different for the Muslims, too. Christians and Jews say the son is Isaac, Muslims say it was Ishmail.

No because no such covenant exists. Cousins they were but the covenant was with Isaac.
Genesis 21
In Isaac - (verse 12)
8And the child grew, and was weaned: and Abraham made a great feast the same day that Isaac was weaned.
9And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham, mocking.
10Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac.
11And the thing was very grievous in Abraham's sight because of his son.
12And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.
13And also of the son of the bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed.
While Ishmael was Abraham's seed the Covenant was with Isaac see Genesis 17
15And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be.
16And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her.
17Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?
18And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee!
19And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.
20And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation.
*****************************************************************
21But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year.
*******************************************************************
22And he left off talking with him, and God went up from Abraham.
Ishmael shall be made a great nation - and he has been - but the Covenant was with Isaac.
