According to the Apostle Paul in his letter to the Romans, people were saved in Old Testament times by having faith in the God of Abraham (Yahweh), just like today. The people who knowingly rejected the teachings of Yahweh, either by their disbelief in him, or their unwillingness to do what he commands, went to hell.

We are not sure what happens to people who never had a chance to hear about this God, because the Bible isn't clear.

The Jews had 1500 years of God's laws. Very specific but no one was abl;e to keep all of them. Jesus simplified them.
God's laws have not changed.
example;
(Ecclesiastes 9:5-6) For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all, neither do they anymore have wages, because the remembrance of them has been forgotten. 6 Also, their love and their hate and their jealousy have already perished, and they have no portion anymore to time indefinite in anything that has to be done under the sun.

THE DEAD SIMPLY REMAIN ALSEEP IN DEATH UNTIL THE RESURRECTION.
no goping to heaven or hell. this is a false teaching.
some DO have a heavenly future, but the number is limited.
(Revelation 20:4) And I saw thrones, and there were those who sat down on them, and power of judging was given them. Yes, I saw the souls of those executed with the ax for the witness they bore to Jesus and for speaking about God, and those who had worshiped neither the wild beast nor its image and who had not received the mark upon their forehead and upon their hand. And they came to life and ruled as kings with the Christ for a thousand years.

The number is 144,000
Rev. 7;4 and 14;1

When Jesus came to earth all the rules changed. Many (including myself) believe that in the three days that Jesus was dead he went to Hell to reclaim souls, the bible says (and bible books) that Jesus at that time took the keys of Death and Hell from Satan, by doing this, people who were condemed to hell before this by satan was removed from hell and taken with Jesus, and only after this did Jesus completly control who went to heaven and to hell and he also took the ability to kill from Satan at this time. Jesus is said to have talked and preached to the damned and those who choose to follow at that time were allowed

Also to add to the answer given by the first post (which in itself is a very good answer) The bible states that we are "judged by what we know", therefore if a person had never known or was never exposed to God or Jesus, they were and are judge by what the do know to be right an wrong and for their beliefs of spirituality

Scripture is VERY clear on this!

Explantion 1:

God proclaimed that he would write his law "in their hearts"....all who sought to do what is "good and just" will find their way to heaven. "12All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. 13For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God's sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. 14(Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law, 15since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.) 16This will take place on the day when God will judge men's secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares" (ROM 2:12-16).

WHY? BECAUSE:

Explanation 2:

After Jesus' death, he went down to the nether world and preached to all those who had been held captive there. "18For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit, 19through whom[d] also he went and preached to the spirits in prison" (1 PET 3:18-19)

Explanation #3

We know that such a place exists because Jesus himself told us of it: He called this place, "Abraham's side". "There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
22"The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23In hell,[c] where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.'

25"But Abraham replied, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.' (LK 16:19-26)

Explanation 4:

No-one could go to heaven before Jesus ascended there. God determined that Jesus would be first in all things: "he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy" (COL 1:18b).

Explanation 5

Even the "good" thief who was crucified next to Jesus and to whom was foretold that he would "be with me in paradise" this day, actually went to the place of the dead where Jesus preached. See explantion #2.

WHY? See explantion #4!
