Looking at when nurses took on medical care, as opposed to basic nursing, e.g. giving injections, instead of doctors.

I'm going back years ago and remember when the nurses were SENs or SRNs and I think that the SRNs could give injections, this all changed years ago, my niece is a nurse,(sister) and I think she can give injections maybe they have to do some sort of upgrade.

I'm researching this for a paper on Civil War Medicine. Hypodermic needles were invented prior to the American Civil War (1861-1865). Female nurses also began showing their tremendous value in that war. Sometimes a small incision had to be made in the skin to inject a drug such as morphine solution at the time of the Civil War since needles were often rather dull from repeated (and unsterilized) use. Nurses provide a great deal of care for the huge number of sick and wounded in the war. I'm certain they would have given some injections somewhere in America in the1860s.

It depends where you are. (BTW so does the dates of the civi war - in England ours started 1642)

Nursing qualifications and duties vary. In the UK i think nurses have always been able to give injections. (excluding SENs)
